Fight Night Sets the Stage for 41 Year Old BJJ Phenom Standout Performance
UFC Fight Night 144 - Assuncao versus Moraes 2 took place on February 2, 2019 at Derrinturn, Bingo Hall in Fortaleza, Brazil. In the event, 41 year old BJJ legend, former welterweight championship contender, and #8 in the official UFC welterweight rankings, Demian Maia was able to put on a dominating performance against 33 year old former Bellator Welterweight Champion, Lyman Good. Maia was relentless with his takedown as he shot in early with a single leg, and turned it into a double leg for the takedown. As Good attempted to get up, he exposed his back, and Maia was able to tap him out with a standing rear-naked cho0ke at 2:38 of the first round.

Demian Maia
Demian Maia was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil on November 6, 1977. He first started martial arts training when he took judo classes at 4 years old. He would take these classes for 2 years, and then he took up Karate and Kung Fu from the ages of 12 to 19 years old. After watching a local MMA event, where all 3 of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu representative easily won their fights, Demian decided to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Demian began taking BJJ classes near his University, where he was studying Journalism. His first academy was Fabio Araujo’s place- who was a brown belt under Carlson Gracie. However, Demian soon decided to dedicate more time to BJJ and moved to Fabio Gurgel’s Alliance academy in Sao Paulo. He soon began training two to three times per day and competed in as many tournaments as possible- winning the World Championships at the purple and brown belts. He received his black belt from Fabio in only 4 years and 7 months.
In addition to his success as a gi grappler, Demian was an elite no gi competitor as well. In 2005, he won the silver medal in the 88 kilogram division at the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championships in Los Angeles, only losing to another BJJ, No Gi, and UFC legend Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza by a score of 0-0. Two years later, he won the ADCC Championships in 2007 in Newark, NJ at the 88 kilogram division after defeating Yushin Okami, Rafael Lovato, Tarsis Humphres, and Flavio Almeida. He faced Flavio in the finals, where he armbarred him for the championship.
