Aikido Extensions by Bruce Bookman

Bruce Bookman first began training in the art under Yoshimitsu Yamada Shihan and under his tutelage, Bookman became the youngest aikido blackbelt in America at the age of 15 after just 3 years of training in the martial art.

After getting his black belt in Aikido, Bruce Bookman began to teach the martial art. One year after getting his black belt at just 16 years old Bruce Bookman went to Mexico City for two months to teach aikido at a school while the school was waiting to receive a master from Japan to teach there permanently.

At the age of 19, Bruce Bookman then moved to Japan to become an apprentice at the Aikido International World Headquarters. While at the International World Headquarters, Bruce Bookman trained under Kazuo Chiba Shihan and other prominent masters of Aikido.

One of these big names of Aikido that Bruce Bookman got to train with was Kisshomaru Ueshiba, the son of Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido. Bruce Bookman stayed in Japan for two years and during that time he earned his 3rd-degree black belt in Aikido.

In 1981, Bruce Bookman moved back to the United States, specifically to Seattle, Washington. There he would establish his own gym, named Aikido Northwest. Also at that time, Bruce Bookman would become a senior member of the United States Aikido Federation (USAF Western Region) Teaching Committee under the order of Kazuo Chiba Shihan, Bookman’s main master during his time in Japan. The pair would continue to work together closely for over 14 years.

In 1998, Bruce Bookman would officially become a 6th-degree Aikido black belt, which in Aikido is considered being the rank of a master.

In 2000, Bruce Bookman would amicably part ways with the USAF to start his own Aikido Organization, Tenzan Aikido, where he teaches full time to this very day.

On top of being a master in the art of Aikido, Bruce Bookman has also trained in Boxing, tae kwon do, judo and even weapon-based martial arts like Araki-ryu and iai-do. On top of all that Bruce Bookman also holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with a total of 20 years of experience training in just that art.

Outside of martial arts, Bruce Bookman has also been a practitioner of yoga on and off since he was a child.
