The Bull Sweep &Open Guard Tactics by Charles Negromonte

Negromonte was born in the fall of 1988 near the coast in the eastern part of Brazil. He was briefly exposed to martial arts as a child in the form of Judo, but he didn’t take to it at the early age of six. Instead, he found himself focused on more traditional team sports such as soccer. Before he ever truly became interested in martial arts, Charles had spent years as a competitive soccer player.

After his local soccer team had to shutter its doors as a result of budgetary issues, Negromonte found himself without a sport to sink time into. It didn’t take him long to find a new addiction: skateboarding. Before long, Negromonte was finding some success entering competitions as an amateur freestyle skateboarder.

Charles first became interested in Jiu Jitsu around the age of sixteen because his brother, Orlando, was training at a local academy. Seeing an opportunity to join his brother, the young Negromonte decided to try the grappling sport and found that his intense focus on sports transferred well. He had found his true calling.

Charles trained for a few years with his first academy and found himself a brown belt after a very short time. He completed his high school education and turned his life towards sports permanently by choosing to make a living with BJJ. He found himself looking for stiffer competition and, needing to be pushed in order to grow, Negromonte left his first school to join Ze Radiola at Gracie Barra.

Radiola operated what was, at the time, one of the best grappling gyms in the world. They trained hard, competed constantly, and were a team of true professionals dedicated to improving their craft. At Gracie Barra, Negromonte found the challenge he had been looking for and was able to accelerate his growth by training with world-level talent.

Committed to his craft and desperate to make his way onto the professional circuit, Charles moved out of his home and into the gym itself to make training more practical. In order to help fund his tuition and board, Charles also began teaching classes. This gave him invaluable experience working directly under some of the best coaches in the world. He gained the opportunity to travel to affiliate schools and learn from even more world-class talent, including Braulio and Victor Estima in England.

After making the semi finals and the finals at World Championships several times at brown, Charles was promoted to black belt in the summer of 2012. Shortly after being promoted, Negoromonte went back to the UK in order to train with the Estima brothers again. While he was there, he also developed a relationship with one of the best guard players of all time, Roger Gracie. After spending years under Radiola and associating with the Estimas, they gave their blessing for Negromonte to join Roger Gracie Academy.

After becoming a black belt and relocating to London, Negromonte was able to overcome his dry spell and win some major tournaments, including the European No-Gi Open and the South American Championships.

With nearly two decades of experience in grappling, Negromonte has started to film content in his spare time. This gives him another outlet for his passion to help others grow. Charles  also continues to compete on the international circuit in 2022, having gone 2-1 at the 2022 ADCC Trials.
