Gabriel Arges Biography

Gabriel Arges was born in Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil on January 29th, 1993. Gabriel played a variety of sports when he was a kid, but his first martial arts experience was at the age of 14 when he decided to try Thai boxing. However, this was a short lived endeavor as Gabriel was more interested in his high school’s soccer team, which he was captain of, at that time. It would not be until the age of 16 that Gabriel would try his hand at jiu jitsu. In his early teens, Arges has more than a few friends who trained and competed in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Often times his friends would invite him to watch their tournaments and even attend open mat sessions at their homes. This exposure to jiu jitsu piqued Gabriel Arges’ interest which led Gabriel to join a BJJ gym close to his house.

It was here that Gabriel would meet his first of many influential instructors, Fernando Fialho. Fialho was a member of the Gracie Barra Belo Horizonte team at the time. He had just been given his brown belt and was starting off in his coaching career with plenty of eager students to teach. Gabriel Arges would end up to be one of his best students and in only 18 months under the instruction of Fernarndo, Gabriel received his blue belt.

Gabriel Arges decided to compete more after he received his blue belt. Fialho’s academy did not have any upper belts to roll with and only offered three classes a week. So with Fialho’s permission, Arges decided to supplement his training regimen by splitting his time between Fialho and Marcelo “Uirapuru” Azevedo at the Gracie Barra Belo Horizonte head quarters. It was there at the Gracie Barra Belo Horizonte head quarters that Gabriel Arges befriended Felipe “Preguiça” Pena who was still a purple belt at the time. Both Pena and the senior coach Uirapuru helped to push Gabriel’s game to the very next level.

From 2011 an onwards Gabriel Arges and Felipe Pena trained extensively together. Both of them would travel together and train at Felipe’s academy.  Felipe opted to return to Romulo Barral’s academy in 2012 where he had been preparing for the previous year for the World Championship and Pan Ams. Felipe ended up invited Gabriel who willing followed. It was here that Arges would form another fruitful student – teacher relationship with Barral. Romulo Barral was a huge influence on Gabriel’s decision to become a pro Brazilian Jiu Jitsu athlete. Barral would go on to promote Arges to brown belt following his first world title in 2014. Both Gabriel Arges and Felipe Pena were awarded their black belts at the same time while both on the podium at the No Gi World Chamionship in 2015.
