Fernando Reis Biography

Fernando Andrade dos Reis was born in Uberlândia, a town in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil on November 6, 1992. Fernando took Judo lessons as a child, and developed a love for martial arts. However, his mother did not agree with his interest in combat sports, deeming them to be violent and unsafe. As time went by, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) became more main stream. It was through MMA that Reis became familiar with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He was only ten years old at the time. After a friend showed Reis a few jiu jitsu techniques he left Judo and instead turned his focus towards Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Fernando managed to convince his father to take him to a grappling academy. Reis was just 13 years of age when he started training under the guidance of the legendary instructor Tiago Rocha.

At the level of juvenile blue belt, Fernando Reis was already starting to catch the attention of older grapplers. He would soon be regarded as a rising star in the sport. Reis structured his life around training and competing in Brazilain jiu jitsu. Once receiving his brown belt, Fernando Reis moved to Sao Paulo to train at the Alliance Academy head quarters. It was here that his aspirations to become one of the greatest in the sport would begin to take shape as Reis repeaed the benefits of a more competitive training environment. Fernando’s time at Alliance led him to many important titles, including Brazilian Champion, South American Champion, and World Championship runner up. He would go on to receive his black belt by one of team Alliance’s leaders, Fábio Gurgel in June, 2016.
