As a child he was initially drawn to conventional sports like football (soccer). Eventually, he became interested in combat sports but instead of BJJ he found his way to judo and fell in love with the throwing art.
In time, his parents decided to transition him to Brazil’s unofficial national pastime: jiu jitsu. He left his judo roots to join a Carlson Gracie school under Ari Galo, a local instructor. Galo was personal friends with Barboza’s father, which was the reason for the change in plans.

The two Brazilian transplants made themselves known almost immediately, securing medals on the world's biggest IBJJF stages, in both the World Championships and the Pan American Championships. After several years as a standout member of Carlson Gracie's team, Barboza made the decision to affiliate himself with Checkmat, a prestigious Jiu Jitsu organization known for producing world-class champions.
This transition represented a new chapter in his career, offering fresh opportunities for growth and a chance to further elevate his skills. As further explanation of why Barboza moved to Checkmat: he married one of their members and decided to start his family with her!
Aligned with Checkmat, Barboza found himself surrounded by a community of elite practitioners, each contributing their unique knowledge and expertise to his journey. The affiliation with Checkmat provided him with access to a network of top-tier training partners, world-class instructors, and a competitive environment that fueled his desire for continuous improvement.

His technical finesse, combined with his strategic approach to the sport, enabled him to excel in both Gi and No-Gi competitions. With each tournament, he showcased his mastery of sweeps, submissions, and positional dominance, leaving opponents and spectators in awe of his abilities.
Beyond his success on the mats, Barboza remains a humble and respected figure within the Jiu Jitsu community. Known for his sportsmanship and humility, he embodies the values and ethos of the art.
