The Tozi Pass and Pressure Passing Mechanics by Roberto Tozi

At first, Tozi wasn’t interested in the groundwork portion of Judo, called Newaza in that martial art, however, his coach recommend that he work on that aspect of his game, so he joined a Jiu-Jitsu club.

From his time training at that club, Roberto Tozi became enamoured with the ground game and started to spend more of his time training in that martial art. At that club, Tozi trained under Carlos Libre until he earned his brown belt in BJJ. From there Tozi moved to the famous Godoi/Macaco gym in Sao Paulo, and graduated to black belt by Godoi after 3 years under him with the brown belt.

Tozi continued to train with Godoi after Godoi and Macaco went their separate ways and Tozi even went on to fight and defeat Macaco on two different occasions. In 2006 Roberto Tozi decided to try his hand at MMA and fought a few times under the ruleset from 2006 to 2008.

In BJJ, Tozi became famous for his top game and especially for his ability to pass guard. He pioneered what is known as the Tozi Guard-Pass or the Sao Paulo/Paulista Pass during his competitive years.
