Who is Pete Letsos?

Peter Panayotis Letsos, Better known as Pete “The Greek” Letsos is an American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Pete Letsos was born on New Years Eve in 1979 in Chicago, Illinois. Like a lot of other Americans around his age, Pete got introduced to martial arts and specifically Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by watching the early UFC’s and seeing Royce Gracie, who was usually much smaller than his opponent’s, easily defeating his opponents and take minimal damage by using his family’s style of Jiu-Jitsu.

Who is Pete Letsos?

Peter Panayotis Letsos, Better known as Pete “The Greek” Letsos is an American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Pete Letsos was born on New Years Eve in 1979 in Chicago, Illinois. Like a lot of other Americans around his age, Pete got introduced to martial arts and specifically Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by watching the early UFC’s and seeing Royce Gracie, who was usually much smaller than his opponent’s, easily defeating his opponents and take minimal damage by using his family’s style of Jiu-Jitsu.

This is what triggered Pete to try the art out himself in 1997 when he joined Carlson Gracie Junior’s academy. After training in the art for several years, Pete decided to take the long trip from Chicago all the way to Brazil in 2002 and train at Carlson Gracie headquarters. During his time there Pete Letsos also dabbled in MMA training with the likes of Jorge “Navalhada”, Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante, Luiz Firmino “Buscapé” and many others.

Passing The Guard No Gi by Pete Letsos

Pete Letsos was only supposed to stay in Brazil for three weeks however he actually ended up staying the birth palace of BJJ for a lot longer. Before he knew it four whole years had passed for Pete in Brazil and he had become one of the sport's best early competitors in the 90s and early 2000s.  

During his time in Brazil, he trained under several big-name instructors and competitors, including Osvaldo Alves and Andre Galvao. Eventually after earning his purple belt Pete would move back to Chicago and trained under Carlson Gracie Jr. again, who would give him his brown belt. 

During this time Pete would also go to Hawaii to train with former two-division UFC champion BJ Penn. Eventually in 2006, P{ete would earn his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Carlson Gracie Jr and would go on to found his own academy, Rio Jiu-Jitsu.
