Who is Dave Habat?

Dave Habat is an All American collegiate wrestler, throughout his career he has been extremely successful fighting for Edinboro University in Pennsylvania. Dave is a former two time EWL Champion and a three time PSAC Champion. Dave is a three time NCAA qualifier and earned two All American selections in his Junior and Senior years after a 4th place and second place finish respectively at the NCAA Division 1 Championships. Dave is also a two time World Team Member who has won a Bronze medal at the European Championships and a Silver medal at the Mediterranean Games. More recently Dave has become a coach for the Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio.

Dave attended high school at St Ignatius under coach Mark Sullivan. Dave was a standout in the wrestling program as he became a four time place winner at the Ohio State Championships. In 2009 He won the title in his Junior year and secured 2 third places in 2007 and 2008, he also managed a second place in his Senior year in 2010. During Dave's high school years he amassed three seasons of over 30 wins including two of 40 and over. Dave finished high school with a dominating win record of 147 wins with only 16 losses, one of the best in St Ignatius' history. After his Senior year he graduated from high school and he was ranked #9 according to InterMat.

After high school Dave took his redshirt year and competed in the wrestling freestyle circuit. Dave recorded a 17 - 4 win loss record including a Gold medal win at Ashland Bill Harris Open, he also secured a 4th and 5th place at the UB Open and the Cleveland State Open respectively. In 2012 Dave joined up with Edinboro University in Pennsylvania where he went on to study a Business Comprehensive major with a minor in Economics. During his freshman year he joined the wrestling program where he succeeded in finishing second at the EWL Championships, qualifying Dave for the NCAA division 1 Championships, but failing to place after a 1 - 2 record during the tournament. Dave secured a third place finish at both the Las Vegas International and the Midlands Championship Tournament. Dave captured first place at the PSAC Championship and third place at both the Michigan State Open and the UB Open. Dave compiled a win-loss record for the season of 36 wins with 9 losses including 7 of his losses to nationally ranked opponents.

In 2013 Dave qualified again for the NCAA Championships and after a 3 - 2 performance he fell one win short of All American selection. Dave won his second straight PSAC title and secured his inaugural EWL Championship win. Dave also amassed runner up placings at both the UB Invite and the MSU Open. After another successful year Dave posted a record of 30 wins and 9 losses for the year.

In Dave’s Junior year he earned his first ever All American selection after finishing fourth at the NCAA division 1 Championships. Dave took out the EWL Championships for the second consecutive year and was crowned PSAC Champion for the third year running. After another great year on the mats Dave secured a 32 - 6 win loss record. The following year Dave would compile his best ever result at the NCAA Championships with a second place finish, earning himself his second consecutive All American honors. Dave was also awarded the EWL Wrestler of the Year as he recorded a 36 - 3 season total.

After graduating from college, Dave has joined up with the Michigan Regional Training Centre and the Cliff Keen wrestling Club, where he trains in a state of the art facility with elite coaches and training partners. Dave has aspirations of becoming an Olympic Gold Medalist as he has spoken about how grateful he is to have the opportunity to wrestle with the help of his clubs. Over the last 5 years Dave has competed at World Championships, European Championships and the Mediterranean Games. In 2017 Dave became the first athlete representing Slovenia to secure a medal at the European Championships as he won third place and took home a Bronze medal. Dave also finished 5th in 2018 at the Euro Championships and secured his best result at the Mediterranean games by winning a Silver medal. Daves most recent result was a 16th place at the 2020 European Championships.

Dave Habat has been a prolific competitor over the course of his career. He has suffered from various injuries throughout his rise to the top of the Ohio ranks in wrestling. Dave has endured hamstring strains, bruised ribs and strained back muscles. Dave would suffer his worst injury as a freshman, an injury that would never fully be repaired. In 2013 Dave would suffer as he mourned the passing of his beloved father, a man that inspired him to become a success. Dave endured through the pain and had still dedicated his athletic passions to his dad. Dave is a special kind of athlete as he has a knack of using the inspiration in his life as a way to keep motivated and stay on the right track.

After missing out on the Tokyo Olympics by just one match Dave has called it quits on his wrestling career. Dave has spoken about how it feels to be a new father with his wife and that his family will always come first. Dave knew it was time to step away from the sport that he has loved so much his whole life. After graduating from college Dave joined the Michigan Regional Training Centre and the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club where he trains amongst elite athletes. Dave spends his days raising his family and coaching young athletes in search of their own Olympic dreams.
