Teddy Atlas was born and grew up on Staten Island, New York the son of a doctor and former beauty pageant contestant. His father Dr. Theodore Atlas, founded several local hospitals and was well known for charitable work in the community.

Teddy Atlas discovered boxing in his mid-teens and would fight a number of amateur fights through the local police league.
As a young man, despite growing up in a relatively well-to-do family, he found himself living a relatively troubled youth.Teddy Atlas would drop out of school as a teen and have a number of run ins with the law early on. He even participated in an armed robbery and served time on the infamous Rikers Island in NY.

While he was awaiting trial, a childhood friend introduced him to famed boxing coach Cus D'Amato who became his trainer for the next year and would help him to win the Adirondack Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament. This would not be the only way Cus D'Amato would help young Teddy Atlas during this time. When his trial came about, Cus D'Amato spoke on Teddy's behalf and he would be released into the trainer's custody.

Unfortunately an injury would derail his competitive boxing career and even though Cus D'Amato wanted him to stay on as a trainer, Teddy Atlas would leave the Catskills and drift back into his old ways for another length of time.
During this period, Atlas was involved in a street fight during which his face was slashed by a knife. The wound took 400 stitches to close up and gave him his distinctive scar that runs the length of his face. Though he dabbled in coaching local neighborhood kids during this time, when he wasn't training he was involved in his old troubled ways.

Teddy Atlas Fighter List
It would not be until one of the young boxers he was training had a run in with a local gang that Teddy would find his way back to the Catskills where he would help run Cus D'Amatos gym there. While in the Catskills he would train professional boxers by day and work with local youth in the evenings.
It was here that he would become Mike Tyson's first trainer and helped guide him to several Junior Olympic titles. He would leave Cus D'Amato's gym over a dispute involving Tyson that would sever their business relationship forever.
Teddy would continue his career as a trainer working with athletes like Simon Brown, Shannon Briggs, and most notably Michael Moorer, who would win two heavyweight titles with Teddy Atlas in his corner.
Outside of training professional athletes, Teddy's prowess as a coach allowed him to work with many celebrities and to lend his skills to fight scene choreography for films with William Defoe and others.
In the 1990's, Teddy began work with ESPN as a boxing analyst and commentator, with their popular Friday Night Fights program. He would also work as a boxing commentator during the Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, and 2008 Olympic games in Beijing.
Teddy Atlas has also been an assistant NFL Coach with the New York Jets between 2006 and 2008. In this role he gave boxing lessons to help with footwork and speed. His motivational speeches and mindset classes were also implemented to help players deal with high pressure situations.
Teddy Atlas has worked with a litany of professional and amateur fighters including Mike Tyson who he coached early in the boxer's career.
