Wim Deputter's Best Fight of All Time

For a fighter like Wim Deputter, it’s hard to pin down one amazing moment in a career full of highlights. His 2017 run at the IBJJF Rome Open was one of his best tournament results as a professional black belt competitor in brazilian jiu jitsu. He signed up to compete in the 73 kg and under category that day and stomped through the early rounds of the tournament to reach the semifinals. After a hard fought match, he found himself moving on to the finals where he would put on a dominant display to take home gold at the 2017 IBJJF European Open in London.

Who Did Wim Deputter Lose To?

Along with the amazing highlights come the darker moments that drive a true competitor to even greater success. One of Wim Deputter’s only losses is to another star from his era and Fanatics collaborator, Theodor Canal. The Brazilian phenom Canal squared off with Deputter in 2015 at the IBJJF European open in the 73 kg weight category. Although Deputter did everything in his power to win, Canal was able to secure the title of European Open Champion that day.

Deputter did not let this loss deter him from continuing to challenge at the highest levels. He would go on to medal at several other major IBJJF events in the following years, citing the loss as motivation for him to be more successful in the future.

Wim Deputter Record

Wim Deputter has been in over 600 matches as a competitor. As a professional Mixed Martial Artist, he competed from 2003 to 2009 for a total record of 18-4. During that time, he also competed heavily in BJJ tournaments, where his black belt record is unknown. He’s a multiple time medalist at the European Championships, as well as many other major tournaments in the sport.

Wim Deputter Injuries

Although grappling injuries are quite normal, Wim Deputter has not been public with any major problems that have cost him time on the mat. He’s now retired from competition and focused on helping his athletes stay healthy. He does this through a combination of his online outreach at WimDeputter.com, his work as the head coach and owner of Brasa Belgium, and a BJJ Fanatics instructor with several videos to chose from.

Is Wim Deputter Retired?

Wim Deputter is retired from professional MMA and from professional grappling, although he could always choose to come out of retirement to terrorize the Masters II Division. The thought of Wim getting back out there is tantalizing to us here at BJJ Fanatics; we’d love to see what else he can accomplish before focusing solely on coaching and leaving competition behind.

One of his first ventures beyond tournament grappling is his successful series of BJJ instructionals that show others some of the tips he’s used to dominate the sport.
