Zo's journey in the United States began in 2015 when he traveled to Las Vegas to compete at the World Championships. During his preparation, he attended a camp in Stillwater led by John Smith, a six-time World and Olympic champion and highly accomplished coach. It was there that Zo's path intersected with a young and talented wrestler named Daton Fix, who became his training partner and close friend.

Smith recognized Zo's potential and invited him to train full-time at Oklahoma State, but contractual obligations with the French wrestling federation prevented him from accepting at the time. However, a couple of years later, El Ouarraqe reached out to the OSU staff and was flown to Stillwater to train.
Initially, El Ouarraqe had aspirations of both training and coaching in the United States. His focus shifted when Fix, whom he had been training with, began to excel in competition. El Ouarraqe decided to dedicate himself entirely to helping Fix become the number one wrestler in the country. Alongside Coach Smith and Fix's father, Derek, El Ouarraqe worked tirelessly to support Fix's journey to the top, while also honing his own coaching skills. He had the opportunity to work with other elite athletes, including Final X runner-up Alex Dieringer, All-American Nick Piccininni, and 2016 Olympic champion Helen Maroulis.
Training under Smith, a legendary figure in wrestling with almost three decades of coaching experience, had a profound impact on Zo. Beyond wrestling techniques, Smith imparted valuable life lessons, shaping El Ouarraqe into a better coach and person.
In 2019, Fix secured his spot on the U.S. National Team, and El Ouarraqe accompanied him to the Pan American Games in Peru and the World Team Training Camp in Germany. This experience allowed El Ouarraqe to observe and learn from U.S. National Team Coaches Bill Zadick and Joe Russell, gaining insights into their coaching methods and athlete management.
The international season in 2019 left a lasting impression on Zo, who admired the camaraderie, hunger for success, and support among the wrestlers in the USA Wrestling program. This experience solidified his desire to remain in Stillwater and contribute to the sport as a coach. El Ouarraqe is currently working towards obtaining permanent residency and aims to continue growing as a coach, aspiring to develop numerous exceptional wrestlers like Fix within the Oklahoma State wrestling program. Passionate about being a Cowboy and committed to the success of the program, El Ouarraqe cherishes his life in Stillwater and strives to help Oklahoma State regain its former wrestling greatness.
