Who Is Ken Gabrielson

Ken Gabrielson is a martial artist out of Huntington Beach, California. Ken is known to be the 1st American Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt in history. Ken received his Black Belt under Relson Gracie, a member of the legendary Gracie family that founded the martial art known today as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.. Ken has been practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for over half of his life with 4 decades under his belt. Ken started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu when he was in his early 20’s. He already had his feet in combat sports, training in other martial arts when he decided to become more of a well rounded martial artist by adding Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to his toolbox. People seeking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training back then were not as fortunate as practitioners today, as the sport in America was still in its infancy. Ken would opt to take private lessons with another well known member of the Gracie family, Rickson Gracie in Ricksons garage due to the lack of gyms that taught the art. There were little to no tournaments available in America but that didn't stop Ken from searching high and low for whatever competitions that he came across. His latest known competition was at the 2020 Pan Ams. Ken Gabrielson is a member of the group of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belts known as the Dirty Dozen. The Dirty Dozen are known to be the first 12 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners to receive the rank of Black Belt outside of Brazil where the martial art originated. The members of the Dirty Dozen consist of (in no particular order) David Kama, Bob Bass, Ken Gabrielson, Craig Kukuk, John Lewis, Chris Haueter, David Meyer, Rick Wiliams, Rick Minter, Chris Saunders, Roy Harris, John Will, and Rick Lucero. Ken Gabrielson was the first to open a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy in the United States.
