Sambo: The Top Game - A Blue Print For "Smeshing" by Khabib Nurmagomedov

Khabib made his debut into Mixed Martial Arts in 2008 by securing a triangle choke on Vusal Bayramov at CFSU Champions League. Over the next two years Khabib generated some serious momentum as he won multiple fights inside the cage at events like;Tsumada Fighting Championship and the Pankration Atrium Cup. In 2009 Khabib made his M1 Global debut as he finished Shahbulat Shamhalaev with an armbar in the first round. Khabib also competed in the Russian Combat Sambo and the World Combat Sambo Championships where he won Gold medals in both events at 74 kilograms. The following year Khabib won his second consecutive World Combat Sambo Championship. Over the next two years Khabib went undefeated in MMA finishing 8 out of 9 opponents with Submissions and Knockouts.

After his successful run of wins in ProFC in Russia, Khabib generated significant interest from the UFC. In 2011 Khabib signed a six fight contract with the UFC, as he looked to extend his record beyond his already significant 16 - 0 unbeaten career. In Khabib's UFC debut he fought Kamal Shalorus and submitted him with a rear naked choke 2 minutes into the third round. Over the next few years Khabib continued his undefeated run through the UFC as he dominated opponents with his aggressive Wrestling and Sambo style of fighting. Khabib knocked out Thiago Tavares and Darrell Horcher, and secured decision wins over Abel Trujillo, Pat Healy, Rafael Dos Anjos and a controversial win over Gleison Tibau. Prior to his fight with Abel Trujillo, Khabib weighed in over the permitted weight limit and decided to surrender a percentage of his fight purse, and they fought at a catchweight. During the fight Khabib set a new record of 21 successful takedowns out of 28 attempts.

Khabib signed a new UFC contract to fight Eddie Alvarez for the Lightweight Championship at UFC 205. In the midst of a controversial decision by the UFC and Eddie Alvarez, the fight was cancelled as they promoted a title fight between Eddie Alvarez and Connor McGregor instead. Khabib displayed his outrage publicly by calling Alvarez a "bullshit champ" and accused the UFC of being a freak show. At UFC 205 Khabib fought Michael Johnson as he put on a clinic of domination, submitting Johnson in the third round. Khabib was meant to fight Tony Ferguson at UFC 209 but due to a weight cut that went wrong Khabib was forced to pull out of the fight, making this the third time the fight between the two warriors was cancelled. At UFC 219 Khabib fought Edson Barboza, Khabib won all three rounds securing multiple takedowns and landing dominating ground and pound, and winning a unanimous decision.

At UFC 223 a title fight was scheduled between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. Ferguson was forced to pull out of the fight due to a knee injury and for the fourth time the fight was cancelled. Max Holloway was meant to be the replacement but he was ruled out by NYSAC due to extreme weight cutting. The UFC had trouble finding an opponent as Anthony Pettis didn't make weight and Paul Fedler did not have a high enough ranking to take the fight. The controversial inclusion of Al Laquinta was a strange choice and due to another weight issue only Khabib was eligible to win the Lightweight title. Khabib dominated Laquinta and was crowned the UFC Lightweight Champion.

After UFC 223 Khabib was still unbeaten on 26 straight wins inside the cage. After recent controversy and bad publicity, Khabib would defend his title at UFC 229 against the notorious Connor McGregor. There was a lot of trash talk going on and Connor crossed many boundaries that angered Khabib. During the fight Khabib brutalised Connor in the first two rounds, but in the third Connor showed signs of a comeback forcing Khabib to lose his first ever round inside the cage. In the fourth round Khabib took Connor down and submitted him with a brutal neck crank. After the fight more controversy spilled out as Khabib jumped the cage and assaulted Dillon Danis, as a brawl between both camps spiralled out of control. Both fighters received suspensions and coped massive fines.

Khabib went on to defeat his last two opponents Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje at UFC 242 and 254 respectively. After the fight against Justin Gaethje, Khabib announced his retirement from Mixed Martial Arts. Khabib went on to speak about how he promised his Mother he would not fight without his late father. Khabib retired from the UFC as the undisputed undefeated Lightweight Champion on 29 wins. Khabib returned to Russia where he bought an MMA promotion called Gorilla Fighting Championship. Khabib renamed his company Eagle Fighting Championship (EFC) after his nickname the Eagle.
