Like all other successful college wrestlers, Thomas Gnatt started his wrestling career in high school. Thomas Gnatt is originally from Cahokia, Illinois and wrestled for Cahokia High School where during his junior year, he finished third in the state of Illinois. In his senior year of High School, Thomas Gantt was a class 2A state runner-up at 135 pounds, finishing the season with a 37-2 record.

After graduating from high school, Thomas Gnatt would go on to attend North Carolina State University and compete for the university’s team, the Wolfpack. In his first year at the school, Thomas Gnatt would complete his freshman year at NCSU with 15 victories. 

In his sophomore year, Thomas Gantt would be the NCSU’s starter at 149 pounds and went on to finish with a record of 16 wins and 9 losses.
