After enrolling at the UWF's dojo as a young man, Shigeo Miyato underwent rigorous training to become a professional wrestler in Japan. He received guidance from Akira Maeda, a renowned professional wrestler and mixed martial artist, who taught him the skills necessary to succeed in the ring. The training process typically takes anywhere from one to three years to complete.
Catch Wrestling Takedown Solutions by Yuko Miyato
Miyato initially signed with NJPW in 1985, but it wasn't until 1987 that he began competing regularly. On August 19th of that year, Miyato was submitted by Takayuki Iizuka. The following day, Miyato teamed up with Tatsuo Nakano and Yoji Anjo in a match against Kenichi Oya, Kensuke Sasaki, and Osamu Matsuda. Despite losing, the match was highly praised by fans and critics alike.
In 1991, Miyato caught the attention of UWF-I (Union Of Professional Wrestling Force International) and was signed to the organization. He began training in catch wrestling at the UWF-I dojo under the tutelage of Billy Robinson and Lou Thesz. During his time at UWF-I, Miyato competed against notable names such as Dan "the Beast" Severn and Bob Backlund.
One of Miyato's early rivalries at UWF-I was with Tatsuo Nakano. The two exchanged wins and losses over the course of several months, creating a compelling storyline for fans to follow.
After retiring, Miyato shifted his focus to coaching and began teaching catch wrestling. He became the head coach of the UWF Snake Pit in Japan, where he shared his knowledge and skills with aspiring wrestlers. He has also trained several MMA fighters, including Kazushi Sakuraba, who has credited Miyato for his success in the sport.

Yuko Miyato's Best Fight of All Time
It’s always hard to pick which moment is the greatest in a fighter’s career, especially when that fighter is Yuko, a legendary pioneer of the early submission grappling and MMA scene. We think one of the biggest names on his hit list must’ve been Sakuraba. In 1994, Yuko Miyato competed in the UWFi Next Challenger Final against Kazushi Sakuraba. The match was held on November 30, 1994, at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, Japan. Miyato emerged victorious over Sakuraba, winning the match in 7 minutes and 53 seconds. The fact that Miyato beat Sakuraba, one of the greatest martial artists to ever compete, speaks for itself. No further credentials necessary, as far as we’re concerned.
Who Did Yuko Miyato Lose To?
Yuko Miyato faced Victor Zangiev in the second round of the UWFi Pro Wrestling World Tournament on May 6, 1994, at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, Japan. The match lasted only 4 minutes and 22 seconds, and unfortunately, Miyato was defeated by Zangiev. Given the 30 year time gap, it’s not clear specific moves or holds were used by either wrestler during the match. Nonetheless, this was a disappointing loss for Miyato as he was eliminated from the tournament in the second round.
