Who is Daniel De Groot?

Daniel De Groot is Dutch black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a top level competitor, and an instructor. As a competitor, Daniel de Groot has traveled the world to compete, making a name for himself in both the European and Brazilian circuits. In 2021, he was awarded his black belt.

What this article covers:

De Groot's main accomplishments in the sport include winning the IBJJF Nogi European and No Gi Brazilian championships, making him the only Dutchman to ever win the Brazilian championships. In the gi, he has medaled at the IBJJF Europeans and won the IBJJF Curitiba Open. De Groot has also won the elite categories of NAGA and Grappling Industries in submission grappling.

Guillotine Revolution by Daniel De Groot

Daniel began his grappling journey in 2011, after being inspired by the UFC and particularly the video game. Since then, jiu jitsu has become an integral part of his life. In 2016, he completed his Bachelor's degree in Public Administration at Erasmus University Rotterdam, and later obtained his Master's degree in Crisis & Security Management from Leiden University.

After finishing his studies, Daniel decided to pursue jiu jitsu as a full-time career. He splits his time between Rotterdam, The Netherlands and Santos, Brazil, where he trains at some of the best gyms in the world. When he's not on the mats, Daniel enjoys cooking and trying out new recipes, going to the gym, playing chess, and reading about history and philosophy, particularly Stoicism.

In 2015, Daniel started teaching classes at Erasmus BJJ, and since 2018, he has been an instructor at The House Fight Company in Brazil, where he has taught seminars and classes around the globe, including in Germany, Los Angeles, Bulgaria, and Brazil. His students have achieved notable success in major competitions like AJP Almere, ADCC Netherlands, and Grappling Industries.

Daniel also shares his knowledge and passion for jiu jitsu through online content creation. He has produced a series on guard retention, and regularly uploads technique and strategy videos on his YouTube channel. In addition to teaching group classes at Erasmus BJJ, Daniel also offers private and small group classes, and serves as an online instructor, providing one-on-one classes and webinars.

For Daniel, competition is not just about winning, but also about testing the effectiveness of the techniques he teaches. He is committed to only teaching techniques that he knows will work in high-level competition and against tough resistance. As an athlete, instructor, and content creator, Daniel is a respected figure in the jiu jitsu community, who is dedicated to helping others improve their skills and achieve their goals.

This young man has some serious talent and has already entered the arena as one of the strongest lightweight competitors in Europe. After his European and Brazilian titles, he set his sights on ADCC 2022. Although he didn’t win gold, we’ve no doubt that De Groot will be back to challenge for the podium again this year and for many more to come.

Daniel De Groot's Best Fight of All Time

According to Daniel, one of his biggest tournament wins was at the IBJJF No-Gi European Championship in 2018, where he won the black belt featherweight division. This was a significant achievement as it was his first major championship win at the black belt level and it came against tough international competition. He had previously won the European Championship at brown belt in 2017, making the victory at the black belt level even more impressive.

Who Did Daniel De Groot Lose To?

Although he competes routinely on the European and international tournament circuits, he also competes for individual European promotions, including Quest Fight League, whe he’s got a 2-1 record as a grappler. The surprising part? All three matches took place back to back.

He worked hard to get into the late rounds of the tournament against Kostas Lampos in October of 2021, but he wasn’t able to overcome the Greek grappling star, and took a single loss that night. Although the loss was difficult, he’s continued to show up in huge tournaments, including the European, Middle East & African ADCC Trials.

Daniel De Groot Record

Daniel De Groot’s record isn’t compiled anywhere in one place. He’s competed in all sorts of major competitions, including the European, Middle East & African ADCC Trials, the IBJJF No Gi Brazilian and European Championships, Quest Fight League and many others.

Daniel De Groot Injuries

Although every grappler is bound to encounter small injuries, Daniel De Groot has kept any such setbacks private, which suggests that his career has been relatively injury-free. He is known for his proactive approach towards injury prevention, and while he hasn't shared any details of injuries with the media, it's reasonable to assume that he may have accumulated some damage from his years spent training and competing in the sport. Check back in with us in a few years, when Daniel is over 30 and feeling it!

Is Daniel De Groot Retired?

Daniel isn’t even close to retired; he just received his black belt and officially went professional in 2021, after already earning a master’s degree! The young man has ambition, and he’s impressed us at BJJ Fanatics with his impressively advanced coaching style for someone of his age. Clearly, experience and mat time speak for themselves and trump age any day of the week!

More recently, De Groot has embraced the coaching side of life and begun to film digital content in partnership with us here at BJJ Fanatics. Daniel has two products with fanatics and not much use for fancy names: “Guillotine Revolution” and “Footlock Revolution” are his clearly-labeled offerings.

"Guillotine Revolution" is a comprehensive guide to mastering the guillotine choke. De Groot demonstrates a wide variety of techniques for finishing the guillotine choke from different positions, including standing, guard, and side control. He also covers the basics of setting up the choke and the common mistakes to avoid. The video is designed for both beginners and advanced practitioners looking to improve their guillotine choke game. It provides step-by-step instructions, detailed explanations, and live demonstrations to help viewers learn and master the technique.

With his second volume, “Footlock Revolution” you'll learn tricky ways to disguise foot locks as heel hooks, gaining an edge over your opponents with tips and details not found anywhere else. You’ll also master multiple entries and combinations to smoothly navigate the lower body, unlocking dozens of possibilities to ankle lock and heel hook your opponents. Finally, you will learn to defend against dangerous entanglements using De Groot's defensive concepts. Make sure to take some tips from this young and rising BJJ star today.
