Who Is Frank Chamizo?

Frank Chamizo Marquez is a Cuban born and Italian adopted freestyle wrestler. Frank has competed at the top level and is a two time World Champion, he has also won 4 titles at the European Championships, a Pan American Championship and has claimed a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Frank started his wrestling career out of Cuba, where he achieved Pan American Gold, he also finished third claiming the bronze medal at the 2010 World Championships in Moscow, Russia. 

In 2011 Frank Chamizo migrated to Italy where he would become the greatest Italian wrestler of all time. In 2014 Frank would chalk up title wins at the Yasar Dogu in Istanbul, Turkey and the Spain Grand Prix In Madrid  as he dominated his opponents securing numerous Tech Falls.

2015 was a breakout year for Frank Chamizo as he won Gold at the U23 European Championships and the Copa Italia 2. His next two tournaments he would finish in second place earning Silver medals at the European Games and the Spain Grand Prix. He backed up a month later winning Gold at the Poland Open before competing in the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas, where he dominated his opponents by winning all 5 fights and securing his first World title at 65kg, by defeating Uzbekistan wrestler Ikhtiyor Navruzov in the final.

In the next two years Frank would move up to 70 kg and would light up the wrestling stage by adding several more tournament Golds, Including; The Italian Nationals and another European title. Frank also competed for Italy in the 2016 Summer Olympics where he won 3 out of 4 matches winning his first ever Olympic Bronze medal. In 2017 Frank continued his rise to the top and won his second world title, this time at 70 kg by dominating his competitors, and upstaging the American James Green 8 - 0 in the final.

Over the next 3 years Frank continued his onslaught in the wrestling world by winning several Gold medals at different tournaments, including European National Gold back to back in 2019 and 2020. Frank’s most recent campaign came at the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics which was overdue because of the covid-19 pandemic. Competing at 74kg Frank went 2 wins and 2 losses finishing 5th overall.

How Old Is Frank Chamizo?

Frank Chamizo was born in Matanzas in Cuba on the 10th of July in 1992, making him currently 29 years of age.

Frank Chamizo’s Family!

Frank Chamizo had a rough upbringing growing up in Cuba, he was born into poverty as his parents lived elsewhere in the world. Frank was raised by his Grandmother and she did the best she could for him. Frank would be inspired to achieve greatness through the hard struggles in his life, as helping his Grandmother make ends meat weighed heavily on his mind. 

At the Age of 7 Frank was curious about a wrestling facility that he had stumbled across, so he joined up and started training. As Frank began to receive notoriety from his peers for his natural wrestling talents, the Cuban government would seize the opportunity to help Frank by paying his tuition so he could attend high school and keep his wrestling heading towards success.

In 2010 at the age of 18 Frank would win a Bronze medal competing for Cuba in the World Championships. The next year he placed 12th at the worlds and shortly after would receive a 2 year ban from Cuba’s Wrestling Federation for alleged weight management issues. This was a turning point for Frank as he decided to leave Cuba and immigrate to Italy. It was here that the Italian government adopted him as one of their own as he wrestled his way to National and International stardom.

Frank Chamizo's Best Fight of All Time!

Frank chamizo has had a stellar career and has had many great wrestling bouts in his time. Two of his best would undoubtedly be in 2015 when he defeated Ikhtiyor Navruzov (4 - 3) for his first ever World Championship. Another would be his second World title win in 2017 when he beat the American James Green (8 - 0)

His best ever fight would have to be against his long time rival and 5 time Olympic and World Champion Jordan Burroughs. The heated battle these two athletes have had over the years has been memorable. With Burroughs up 3 - 2 in their head to head, after losing some close fights to Burroughs, Chamizo won a hard fought decision after going (10 - 10) in the 2018 Yasar Dogu Ranking series. Frank has also won their last encounter in 2021 at the Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series securing himself the Gold medal.

Who Did Frank Chamizo Lose To?

Frank Chamizo has lost fights to high calibre wrestlers like; Zaurbek Sidakov, Nikita Suchkov, Soner Demirtas and Toghrul Asgarov. Other losses that have hurt for Frank Chamizo have been in the recent Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where he lost to American Kyle Dake and Russian Magomedkhabib Kadimagomedov, pushing him into 5th place, unable to medal.

One of Frank’s most annoying losses is to his long time rival Jordan burroughs, in what started their heated rivalry. In 2018 Frank Chamizo represented The World All Stars against Team USA in “Beat The Streets” in New York City. Jordan Burroughs would defeat Frank Chamizo 8 - 5 in a very up close and personal battle that would spark a rivalry between the two athletes. 

Frank Chaimizo’s Record!

Frank Chamizo is revered as the best Italian wrestler of all time, he is the only Italian to ever win a world title and he has done it twice at two different weight classes. Frank’s incredible fight record of 150 wins with only 26 losses is an outstanding achievement. 

Frank has an honour list that is incredible as he has won; 2 World Championships at 64 and 70 kg (2015,2017) Runner Up World Champion at 74kg (2019) 4 European Championships at 64, 70 and 74kg (2016,2017,2019,2020) Italian National Championship (2017) Mediterranean Games Gold (2018) Bronze Medal at the Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro (2016) Runner Up at the Individual World Cup (2020) and also representing Cuba he has won Pan American Gold (2010)

Frank Chamizo has had some minor injuries in his illustrious career, he had a minor shoulder complaint which left him sidelined for only a short period of time. His dedication to his sport has Frank focused and well conditioned for any injury recovery.

Is Frank Chamizo Retired?

Frank Chamizo is an active wrestler and has recently competed at the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, although finishing in 5th Frank is determined to further his career by winning more World titles. Frank is also training hard to qualify and medal at the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
