Josh Hinger Biography

Josh Hinger was born in Whittier, CA in the United States on May 28, 1982. He was raise in La Habra and was a competitive wrestler at Sonora High School in Brea. Josh moved at the age of 15 to Temecula, CA to continue competitive wrestling, this time for Chaparral High School. It was here that he won the CIF 145 lbs division during his senior year of high school in 2000.

Then, three years after his high school wrestling, Josh ran into an old wrestling team mate who brought him along one night to his jiu jitsu academy. Josh agreed to go along, hoping to find some mat space to wrestle on with his former team mate. However, the first jiu jitsu class Hinger took completely captivated him. Hinger set forth to learn how the Brazilian’s grapple. In an interview, Hinger recalled this moment, “I remember it was on July 2, 2003 because I loved jiu jitsu so much that I showed up for evening class on the 4th of July and no one was there. I called the instructor and asked if there was class. He said: ‘man, go to a BBQ and watch some fireworks’.”

Hinger made his professional mixed martial arts (MMA) debut with only four months of jiu jitsu training in November 2003. By 2005 his career has extended to 4 – 1 – 0 by the year 2005. Josh Hinger’s first Mixed Martial Arts coach was Chris Brennan. Brennan would be responsible for bringing Josh Hinger from a white belt all the way to a purple belt. In Lake Forest, CA Hinger remained on Chris Brennan’s fight team until 2006 when the group broke apart due to personal issues while training as well as disagreements amongst team leaders. This would ultimately lead to the academy closing.

Once Brennan’s academy closed down Josh worked with Baret Yoshida and Jason Bukich. It would be these two instructors that Josh would earn his brown belt from. Josh would then go on to join Atos Jiu Jitsu academy in San Diego. Hinger quickly earned the respect of this prestigious team while working under Andre Galvao at Atos. Hinger would go on to receive his black belt on December 7, 2013.
