Who Is Marcio Stambowsky

Mario Stambowsky, otherwise known as , a Coral belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu still going strong after over 40 years of training in the art. He received his black belt from Rolls Gracie, one of the biggest legends in Jiu Jitsu. Macarra or Macarrao meaning (spaghetti in portuguese) is a nickname he was given during his surfing days before discovering Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It was originally his brother's nickname but when everybody always saw Mario hanging out with his brother he eventually took on the name as well. Macarrao was born on february 22nd, 1959 in his home town Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. He found Jiu Jitsu and started training in 1975 when he was 16 years old. Macarrao is one of the only Coral belts in the world. Currently an 8th degree coral belt in Gracie Jiu Jitsu. The belt system goes in the order of; (for juveniles) white, gray, yellow,orange,green. For adults the system starts at white, blue, purple, brown, black, coral then redl. A coral belt is awarded to Jiu jitsu masters who have been practicing the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for over 3 decades. Macarrao is currently the highest rank Brazilian Jiu Jitsu belt holder in the Northeast America region.

Mario received his coral belt on July 17th, 2010 by Renzo Gracie, someone whom Marcio used to teach before training under him (Renzo). Renzo Gracie during the belt promotion professed that Macarrao has one of the most beautiful styles he has ever seen in jiu jitsu. 

Marcio’s coach is the legendary Rolls Gracie. Rolls is a son of Carlos Gracie, one of the founders and developers of what is known today as Brazilian Jiu jitsu. Rolls is widely known as the best fighter of the Gracie family. Rolls Gracie was Professor (teacher) of legends in the brazilian jiu jitsu community like Rigan Machado, Rickson Gracie,Carlos gracie jr, Royler gracie, Mauricio “Mauricao” Motta, and of course Marcio Stambowsky. 

Marcio Stambowsky is a member of a prestigious group named “the Famous Five”. These men are known to be the original five Brazilian jiu jitsu fighters who have been promoted to the rank of black belt by rolls gracie before he tragically passed away in a hand gliding accident when he was just 31 years of age. There was actually a 6th member who Rolls Gracie promoted but they decided to keep the name Famous Five

since it had a ring to itl. The group members are Marcio Stambowsky, Mauricio “Motta” Gomes, Romero Cavalcanti, Niacin Azulay, Paulo Conde, and Mario Claidio Tallarico. Mario Stambowsky’s lineage goes as follows; Kano Jigoro, Tomita Tsunejiro, Carlos Gracie, Helio Gracie, to Rolls Gracie. 

Marcio Stambowsky is most known for his closed guard, triangle attacks and leg locks. Marcia has been known to be the first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner to have popularized the triangle choke according to Rickson Gracie. Rickson Gracie being a 9th degree red belt and a member of the Gracie family. Marcio married Carla Gracie (another member of the Gracie family) and had 2 children together Nieman Gracie Stambowsky and Debora Gracie Stambowsky. His daughter, Debora Gracie Stambowsky is one of 2 of the only female gracie family members to obtain the rank of black belt along with Kyra Gracie.His son, Nieman Gracie Stambowsky is currently an Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighter turned MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighter who fights in the welterweight division in the Bellator organization with dreams of being a championship belt holder. Nieman holds a record of 11 wins and 2 losses with 9 of his wins coming via submission. Mario believes his son Nieman Gracie will one day win the championship and knows that he “deserves it” for all of the dedication and years of training he has put in. 

In 2007 Stambowsky moved his family out to the United States to open their own academy. With coaches Luigi Mondeli and Marcio Alencar he founded the Connecticut State Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation in 2013 to help development in bjj in Connecticut and the northeast region.

When Marcio's interest in the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu sparked, his father took him to Rolls Gracie’s academy. His father recognized the name “Gracie” and knew it would be a legit gym with high level training. Rolls had Marcio compete in sports like sambo, freestyle wrestling and judo all helping Marcio to become a well rounded grappler.
