In this video, Neil explores some counters when your opponent bails out of a guillotine. Melanson states having an under hook is of paramount importance. However, the under hook is not a traditional under hook. Rather it is a tight waist under hook. This is done to protect the secondary hand while maintaining control. The second important detail is to keep your choking hand high. The submission is completed by brining your elbows down. Note the emphasis Neil makes of not placing your opponent flat on his back. Rather your opponent should be on a low shoulder and placed at a 45 degree angle. It is still possible to finish the submission when your opponent is flat on his back. However, the issue is if your opponent’s head rotates then your choking hand may be out of place on his throat. This submission goes by several names, the one handed guillotine or cement mixer. However, Neil is clear if this move is done correctly is should be a choke and not a crank. Well done Neil. What a beautiful sequence. Many consider Neil Melanson to be a mad scientist of grappling. This sequence is a fine testament to that. His approach is not based on a singular style but a hybrid of many approaches. He is obsessed with independent and free thinkers like Nicola Tesla and his style of grappling is brilliant testament to that.
