The Bernardo Faria Academy

,

Bernardo Faira is easily one of the most well respected and most accomplished athletes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  His reputation precedes him, he has won the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation Adult Black Belt World Championships 5x.  He was even able to win the most prestigious title in the sport if Jiu Jitsu, that being the Adult Black Belt Open Class World Championship.  This means that he was able to defeat and win the world championships for anybody at any weight solidifying him as the best BJJ fighter in the world at one point in time.

Bernardo has decided to take his talents and reputation to the small town of Bedford, MA in the Boston area.  He has just recently opened his new academy, The Bernardo Faria BJJ Academy.  The school is different from anything we have ever seen in the bjj community.  Bernardo made his new academy in a house, for a person with his accolades, you would assume that he wants a mega academy, but if you know Bernardo Faria, you would understand his mindset behind having this type of school.

In the house there are three different mat areas, he has plenty of space, but not so much that he will lose track of his members.  At many of these mega bjj schools it is hard to get one on one attention and instruction, there can be one hundred people in a class and everyone may not get the opportunity to talk with the instructors, meet each other and the overall atmosphere can be a little less welcoming and a little more intimidating.   Bernardo opened his school in a house and used this structure because he wants to be able to know all of his students, he wants to have a good environment where everyone knows each other, he wants to be able to give personal instruction and care to the students, and it is a comfortable environment.

We know that Bernardo will do excellent at his new academy and that his students will become some of the best in the world and have blast training with him.  Let’s have a look at some documentaries and get to know Bernardo Faria better, and we will have a look at some of his technique and strategy as well.

Bernardo Faria IBJJF Double Gold World Champion 2015

We are going to take a look at a documentary made on Bernardo Faria in 2015.  That is the year that Bernardo was able to win the most prestigious titles in bjj.  He was able to win his weight division and the open weight in the adult black belt world championships.   This is the biggest title and accomplishment you can have in the sport of bjj.  In this documentary we will get to know Bernardo a little better.  What makes him such a great bjj practitioner is not his technique, not his accomplishments, and it actually has nothing to do with him on the mat, his best attribute is how he represents himself off of the mat.

Bernardo one of the nicest human beings on the planet, he is happy, positive, outgoing, and a pleasure to be around.  His smile will light up any bjj academy and make the students thrilled to be there.  Let’s have a look at this documentary below.

Bernardo Faria Pressure Passing Breakdown

Let us take a look at some of Bernardo’s pressure passing in competition.  Bernardo is notorious for having the most pressure out of any bjj practitioner in the world.  He uses a patient and methodical approach to passing the guard that requires no flexibility, no strength, no athleticism, and anybody can do it.  This is the beauty of Bernardo’s game.  People that are older, not as serious, and not as athletic have notoriously said that Bernardo’s game has helped them perform better than they ever thought possible.  The passing style he likes to use utilizes the over under passing position.  If you are not familiar with Bernardo, his game, or this passing style, have a look below and then we will discuss how Bernardo makes it work.

So as you can see in the video above, Bernardo applies massive amounts of pressure on his opponent’s hip.  His goal of this passing position is to immobilize his opponent’s hip movement.  Jiu Jitsu is all about the hips and he is focused on nullifying those hips.  Bernardo is patient and waits for the right time to attack.  When he feels he is able to pass, he will.

Bernardo is going to be building an army of pressure passing monsters at his new academy in Bedford, MA.  His students will not only get the luxury of learning authentic technique that has been proven to work at the highest levels in competition, but they will also get to see inside the mind of a competitor like him and what his concepts and philosophies are.

This is not even the best part of what his students will get, the most important characteristic of an instructor is that they are nice and set a good atmosphere.  Bernardo is notorious for being one of the nicest figures in bjj.  He is always smiling and always has a positive attitude.  This will be the best thing that he can teach his students.  He will spread his positivity, and happiness towards Jiu Jitsu!
