The Power Kimura by Neil Melanson
The power kimura is a much more dominating take on the traditional kimura. Neil Melanson knows a thing or two when it comes to the kimura. Neil Melanson is an American combat sports coach, currently he is the Head Grappling coach at Jaco Hybrid Training Center. He is the former Head Grappling coach at both Xtreme Couture Las Vegas and Alliance MMA. Melanson specializes in Catch wrestling, while drawing elements from Judo. Watch the video below of Neil Melanson demonstrating his power kimura and then we will break down the technique below. Check it out now!
The power kimura is a tight grip that causes a lot of pressure and works really well on strong guys. There are advantages to the power kimura grip that you do not get from the regular kimura. Melanson keeps his technique simple when setting up the power kimura. He likes to use brutality to get into position. Neil does this by pushing his head in the direction of the trapped arm Melanson locks up the grip by hugging his opponent’s arm. He uses the outside of his wrist like a blade to dig into his training partner’s arm, and his hands are gripping his own tricep and elbow. To prevent the guy on bottom from pushing away, Neil Melanson removes all the space between the body and the arm, keeping it tight to his chest. To finish the kimura Melanson passes over his opponent’s head by smashing it with his thigh. This causes your opponent to turn his head and eventually tap to the extreme amount of discomfort and pressure.
The New Kimura by Olympic Judo Champion Satoshi Ishii
Olympic Gold Medalist Satoshi Ishii is a well recognized Japanese judoka and mixed martial artist. His fame comes from his judo grappling success. In 2008 Ishii again won the All Japan Judo Championship in Tokyo, Japan. However his biggest success as a judoka was winning the gold medal in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Satoshi’s “new kimura” is a brutal and effective way to control and submit your opponent. Let’s see how it is done. Check out the video below and then we will break down the technique.
Ishii starts the new kimura from side control. His grip is different than the traditional kimura grip. Satoshi wraps around his training partner’s arm with an over hook and connects it to his bicep. He uses his other arm to slice over his opponent’s arm, putting his hand on his elbow. From here all you have to do is make it tight. Look at how quick Bernardo taps! It does not take much motion at all to finish this kimura. Also take note that there are a few different spots from side control that you can hit this kimura from. Pass your training partners head to make this kimura even more brutal! This is a really cool kimura technique from Satoshi Ishii.
