Awesome Heel Hook Setup From The Inside With Craig Jones

Crazy Inside Heel Hook Setup From Craig Jones

Leg entanglement is a very effective way to set up leg submissions. If you have been around the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu scene you have probably heard of the Danaher Death Squad. With the likes of Eddie Cummings, Garry Tonon and Gordon Ryan, the Danaher Death Squad is notorious for their leg locks. Positions such as inside sankaku have been used widely in the high level BJJ competitors from many world class practitioners. So what exactly is inside sankaku? It is an entanglement where your legs triangle your opponent’s legs from the inside. Inside sankaku is a very powerful leg entanglement. Today we are going to look at an awesome entry into inside sankaku, a heel hook set up, from Craig Jones and 5 time world champion, Bernardo Faria. Watch the video below and then we will discuss his technique. Check it out!

Submission only style of competition seems to suit Jones’ jiu jitsu best, as he possesses a high understanding of the leg attack game. In fact, seven of his 11 victories this year have come by way of heel hook. Known to pull guard rather than elect for top position, this strategy has allowed him to climb deep into several recent no-gi tournaments, including EBI and the prestigious ADCC Championship.

Craig Jones starts off from a butterfly guard position, slightly modified to be like a reverse X guard. Notice he has both hooks on one leg, using this for pressure. From here Jones takes an under hook on Faria on the same side as his hooks. As he takes the under hook, Jones scoots his butt up to Faria’s knee. Notice how connected Jones is to his training partner. Now he can use his opposite arm to reach inside and grab Bernardo’s toes – this prevents him from getting sprawled on. At this point Jones lifts and elevates his opponent and extends his legs through. He puts his left knee behind Faria’s knee and rolls him over into inside sankaku, finishing in the saddle position for an inside heel hook.

Craig Jones has a secret weapon in jiu jitsu... his leg lock system. It Is a System Craig’s that is very easy to learn. There are some pieces to it, but he was able to go from a Purple Belt to one of the best Black Belts in the world in just 2 years. That isn’t to say that everyone who learns it will get as good as him, but they will surely be able to be a lot better than they are and submit a lot of upper belts – even black belts, if they learn it well enough. No one else trains this stuff.
