How To Knee Slice Pass A BJJ Player’s Butterfly Guard
If you have ever faced a BJJ player with a good butterfly guard you have probably had difficulty finding a passing method that works. The butterfly guard is an extremely effective way for a person to use their feet as hooks to control and elevate an attacker. Your game will benefit from training butterfly guard passing. One of those most effective ways to pass this guard is with a knee slice. Why is a nice slice so effective? Good question. Let’s explore why this is such an effective pass. In the video below Youssef Drihmi will demonstrate a slick knee slice for passing a BJJ player’s butterfly guard.
The Smash Pass or Pressure Passing is one of the best ways to defeat the buttefly guard... But, there is an art to pressuring passing and one of the best guard passers in the world is Bernardo Faria. Bernardo is infamous for his over / under pass that he has utilized countless times at the highest levels. The first thing you want to focus on when passing an opponent’s butterfly guard is their grips. To avoid this, Youssef pushes his opponents on their back so that they are flat on the mat. Now Youssef can establish his grips. With one foot in and one foot out, grab the gi by the bottom of the lapel and at the knee. Use pressure to put your training partner’s knee to the ground and replace your grip with your knee to pin the leg. Now you can control his arm and keep him from gripping your own lapel or trying to get up. At this point you have taken away all defense from your opponent’s butterfly guard and can do the knee slice any time you want, however Youssef prefers to pass immediately. When the time is right, do the knee cut while pushing your training partner’s arm across his body. At this point the only thing your opponent can do is try and roll away from you, allowing you to take his back.
This is a really effective way to pass the butterfly guard. Pay attention to how many details there are when it comes to securing your opponent with tight grips and pressure. With some practice and attention to detail you will be able to master the knee slice pass even against high level butterfly guard players. Thanks Youssef for the technique!
