Cobrinha’s Response to Affiliate’s Sexual Assault Charge
Nicollas Araujo, 1stdegree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, was arrested on suspicion of rape and sexual assault of an individual with a disability and also minor. Araujo moved to the US from Brazil and opened a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy named Overall Brazilian Jiujitsu Academy. This event took place in Agoura Hills, California.

At this time it remains unclear where the assaults took place and whether any of the victims are students of the academy. Another business owner also claimed that he had heard parents making remarks about inappropriate behavior by Araujo.
The suspect was an affiliate of Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles, a legend in the sport, which was surprising for many practitioners of the sport. Cobrinha is a multiple-time world champion and well known in the competition circles and some fans even give him legendary status. Cobrinha is also known to be a very honest and respectful grappler that has not been tainted with controversy.
Cobrinha responded to the incident via social media with disdain. He goes on to explain that trust and respect are the principle elements of his teaching philosophy and that sexual assault of any kind violates that trust. Cobrinha also terminated the affilation with Overall BJJ immediately.
This is not the first case of sexual assault occurring by Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructors, however, it is imperative that all grapplers take a strong stance against this kind of behavior. It is important that students and parents trust the instructors and are not hesitant to get their children started due to actions of grossly disgusting individuals. If you notice any kind of behavior such indicating inappropriate action, please bring it up in your community, and do not hesitate to contact the necessary resources to take appropriate measures.
