Develop An Escape Plan With Garry Tonon
Posted by Fanatics Authors on
In Jiu-Jitsu it’s pretty beneficial to be Offensive. If you can control the tempo of the match there is a good chance you can funnel your opponent into an eventual trap. However, since most people are aware of this escapes become essential. A good escape can change the flow of a match very quickly. This creates the epic battles we see unfold in the sport’s biggest events.
Think back to some of your favorite matches. Sure, some might be one-sided Jiu-Jitsu beatdowns. Like that time Andre Galvao used that guys turtle position as a surfboard. BUT have you ever watched Garry Tonon vs Rousimar Palhares? How about Garry Tonon vs Kron Gracie? Or Tonon vs Renato Canuto? Notice a trend?
Garry Tonon is easily one of the most exciting grapplers in the game. On top of competing at the highest level at events like EBI, Kasai Pro, and of course ADCC, Tonon brings his never-quit style to the world of MMA. Currently Tonon is riding a 5 fight undefeated record for ONE FC. In less than 15 months Tonon racked up 5 finishes in 5 fights. Needless to say he has transferred his grappling skills to the MMA world.
What makes Tonon so exciting? Garry continuously goes for the attack, and when he gets put in a bad position he finds a way out! On top of having superb technique Tonon seems to have an endless gas tank. So how does he deal with one of the most feared techniques in Jiu-Jitsu?
One of Tonon’s main influences in Jiu-Jitsu is John Danaher, and he knows a thing or two about heel hooks. Danaher revolutionized the Jiu-Jitsu world with his Enter The System instructionals. Which is why Tonon’s debut instructional with BJJFanatics is aptly titled, Exit The System.

Garry has a unique way of explaining techniques. If you watched the video you can tell that Garry has a clear, detail-oriented method of instructing. This is especially important for escapes. Escapes that are haphazardly performed can lead to serious injury, ESPECIALLY with heel hooks.
When drilling escapes both partners need to be on the same page with what they are trying to achieve. We have seen what happens if someone rolls to late, or the wrong way during a heel hook. In training the person attacking should be mindful so that even if their partner made an escape error, they can remain relatively safe. A lot of drilling can make people more aware of the overall dangers of an improper escape.
Tonon takes you through the escape, and provides the key details to not only get you out of a bad spot, but back into the battle. Sometimes escapes can leave you open for further attacks. With Tonon his goal is to not only get out of danger, but to get back on offense as you can see at the 5:30 mark of the video. Once he escapes Garry is immediately able to return fire with a heel hook of his own.
Garry isn’t simply spamming leg locks either. Instead of immediately going to uncross the feet where Bernardo can see what he is attempting to do, Tonon initiates a roll where he can hide his attack. This example right here is what makes Tonon one of the most exciting athletes in combat sports. There is no down time in Garry’s game, it’s a bombardment of strategic attacks!
