Today marks the birth of Helio Gracie, who passed away in 2009 at the age of 95. Helio Gracie was born on October 1st, 1913. Helio, along with his brother Carlos and many sons, daughters and grandchildren are credited as being the primary driving force in the growth of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as we know it today.
Without Helio Gracie and his family legacy, chances are that none of us would be training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It was the Gracie family's ability to market and spread the art ultimately to the shores of American in the late 1980's and early 1990's that planted the seed for the incredible growth that we continue to see today.

By all means find a way to train
It is said that Helio Gracie continued to train all the way up to the end of his life at age 95. So no matter what your age or excuses might be, put that in perspective and get out there and get a good sweat on for Helio Gracie! Even if you can't get to the gym, work some stuff at home or in your hotel room or wherever you find yourself today. 105 hip escapes would be a nice way to celebrate Helio's birthday!

Introduce someone else to BJJ
What better way to celebrate the birthday of Helio Gracie than to introduce someone completely new to BJJ? The person who served as an inspiration for all of us, could not be repaid any better than for every practitioner out there to help inspire at least one person to give the art a try.
Help your gym or academy and instructor(s)
Find a way to help your gym or home academy and it's team. Help with kids class. Take out the trash. Volunteer to work with the new students. Help clean up at the end of the night. Whatever it is, your instructor will appreciate it and it will go a long way towards keeping the positive, healthy environment going that your instructor works hard to share with his/her students.
