Another testament to John’s teaching ability is his popularity. One example of this is his social media presence. John’s posts are hugely popular. What is unique about his posts is that they are not a step by step breakdown of technique. Rather quite often they focus on the art of learning Jiu Jitsu. John has also been featured in the New Yorker magazine and on the popular show Billions. His instructional videos on BJJ Fanatics are among the most popular ever produced.
This video explores how to do the perfect Kimura from top side control. The video begins with an observation that this is probably the most common positions for Kimuras. However it is often the hardest to finish. Next, John makes a distinction between the pushing hand and the pulling hand. Often times we try to have a push dominate Kimura. Danaher states that correct protocol is to have a pull dominate Kimura. The hand on your opponent’s wrist is the pushing or immobilizing hand. The other hand is the pulling hand. It is an important detail to eliminate slack from this position. The goal should be to get into a position where there is extreme tension on our opponent’s arms. One big problem with tension is that often times we work in a T position with our opponent. We are parallel with our training partner's pectoral line. Instead, Danaher advocates to work above our opponent’s shoulder line. John’s knees are above his training partner’s shoulder. It is imperative to work on what Danaher calls the power line. Essentially this is the diagonal line from the near side shoulder to the far side hip. On this line, his hips are over his training partners shoulders and his head is toward their hips. On this power line there is significantly more tension in his training partner’s shoulder. He traps his training partner’s head with his hips. Next he sweeps his elbow to the end of the lever. The end of the lever is his opponent’s elbow. He pushes off with both legs and pulls on the elbow while driving his hips forward for a quick tap. John states that in order to get to the power line it is often necessary to defeat the frame on his hip created by his opponent’s near side arm. To this he turns his hips and back steps. Note how John likes to have his legs 90 degrees apart above his opponent's head. Another key detail is in John’s head position. If his head is tucked toward the structure of the Kimura then John describes this as “weak and feeble”. Instead, he moves his head backward to create a strong force. Last, John states the direction of his elbow indicates the direction of force. Well done John Danaher. In this short video you have changed the way many of us approach Kimuras.
This video is a wonderful example of John’s ability to communicate technique to even novice grapplers. Like all of Danaher’s instructional videos, there is a lot of detail. I know that I gain new insights every time I re-watch one of his videos. Beyond technique, his instructional videos also serve as an education on the principals of grappling and thinking in systems. These elements have a powerful impact on anyone who makes a careful study of them. John’s education, the success of his students and the popularity that he has achieved are testaments to his exceptional abilities as an instructor. Certainly the Jiu Jitsu community is lucky to have him.
