In the Adult Male Black Belt divisions, there were many thrilling upsets and fantastic matches.  Of special note, was Levi Jones-Leary's lightweight gold medal performance, where he defeated the best lightweight of all time in Lucas Lepri in the finals.  Additionally, he also had great performances in defeating Gianni Grippo, Pedro Ramalho, and Kevin Mahecha on his way to the finals. In winning the IBJJF European championships, Levi became the first Australian to win a major IBJJF black belt tournament.

In the Heavyweight and Absolute Weight Divisions, Gustavo Batista of Atos Jiu Jitsu put on another impressive performance, after already winning the 2018 IBJJF World Championships by closing out the division with teammate Lucas Barbosa (Medium-Heavy).  At this tournament, he competing one weight class above at Heavyweight, and closed out his division in the finals with Atos teammate Kaynan Duarte, after defeating Adam Wardzinski 3 to 0 in the semifinals. In the Absolute division, he defeated Lucas Lepri in the finals 10 to 0 to become a double gold medalist at this tournament.

Levi Jones-Leary Biography

Levi Jones-Leary was born on March 13, 1997 in Bondi, Sydney, Australia.  As a child he competed in a number of sports including the 100-meter sprint, as well as soccer.  During his teenage years, Levi, joined a social program called "Links 4 Learning" which introduced him to Mixed Martial Arts.  This project was designed to help kids at risk of dropping out of school by providing them with a series of activities once a week.  One of the activities was MMA, which Levi took an immediate liking to. From there, Levi decided to join the Garage Jiu-Jitsu academy led by Guillherme Neves.  Once he began training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Levi decided to pursue it as a career by leaving school and becoming the children's instructor at the Garage Jiu-Jitsu academy.

While he was a children's instructor, Levi's true passion was to be a world class competitor- so he travelled throughout the world to compete.  Prior to the IBJJF World Championships and the Pans, he trained at Rubens Charles (Cobrinha's) academy in Los Angeles. However, since he started training, he was a huge fan of the Miyao brothers, and joined Unity Jiu Jitsu Academy, when they opened up their academy in New York City.   After winning the IBJJF European and World Championships at the brown belt level, Levi was promoted to Black Belt by Unity's Murilo Santana on June 2018.

Gustavo Batista Biography

Gustavo Batista was born on March 11, 1996 in Florianopolis, Brazil.  He played soccer during his youth but became interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu through his older brother, that enjoyed training BJJ.  When Gustavo was 15, he decided to join the local academy, which was led by Felipe Teixeira. Gustavo earned his blue belt under Felipe, but decided he needed to move to Sao Paulo and join the legendary PSLPB (Projeto Social Lutando Pelo Bem) gym led by Cicero Costha.

At PSLPB, Gustavo, or better known as Braguinha, for his resemblance to former BJJ world champion Antonio Braga Neto, became close friends and training partners with Leandro Lo.  When Lo decided to split from Costha's PSLPB on September 2015, Branquinha followed him and joined his newly formed NS Brotherhood academy. Gustavo was promoted by Leandro Lo to purple, brown, and black belt.  As a brown belt, he was the #1 brown belt in the world by the UAEJJF (where he even defeated Xande Ribeiro at the UAEJJF event in Buenos Aires) , and also was an IBJJF European Open, and a CBJJ Brasileiro Champion as well.   On October 2017, he was promoted once again by Leandro Lo to black belt.

On January 2018, Gustavo, following his girlfriend, World Champion Luiza Monteiro decided to move to California and train and represent Atos Jiu Jitsu.
