Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has become one of the most popular martial arts in the world, for both men and women. Woman choose Jiu Jitsu as their preferred style for the same reason that men do. It’s a great work out, it’s great for self defense and the competition aspect is always a fun aspect. There are many pro’s in Jiu Jitsu for women. But why? What does BJJ have over other traditional styles like Karate, Taekwondo or Hapkido for women? Here are three big reasons why.

Jiu Jitsu truly works for smaller, less powerful people. So many styles make the claim that their particular art works well for people of smaller stature with lesser power. But many of those claims are false. Jiu Jitsu has proven time and time again that a person of smaller stature can use the submission and choking techniques of Jiu Jitsu to subdue bigger, stronger people. Many women happen to be physically smaller than most men. Jiu Jitsu can even the playing field and keep them safe. It becomes a reality of superior technique defeating strength.

Jiu Jitsu is an art that works as great rape prevention. A real fear that women understandably have is having to fight off an attacker that is looking to commit rape. A potential rapist looks to get their victim to the ground to commit that act of violence. Jiu Jitsu teaches a person how to defend themselves once the fight hits the ground. Potential victims can then subdue their attacker and avoid getting hurt. If there was any one reason for women to train Jiu Jitsu, this would be it.

Women’s Jiu Jitsu competitions have never been bigger. For women looking to get into the sporting aspect of Jiu Jitsu, this is the time. Competitions for women in Jiu Jitsu have become as prestigious as the men’s and stars are born. Mackenzie Dern and Michelle Nicolini are just two of the Jiu Jitsu masters that have had the spotlight of recent times. Even at smaller tournaments, the women’s divisions are some of the best to watch. There are some killer matches with some great finishes.

Jiu Jitsu does not discriminate. It does not care if you are a man or woman. It can provide you with a great state of mind, a healthier body and the confidence to be ready for any tough situation that can occur. Women have so many different choices on what martial art to choose, but they should always consider Jiu Jitsu. It can end up leading to a fun competition career, or it might even save their life.
