Mindset Tips With Tom DeBlass!
Posted by Fanatics Authors on
It is likely that you have, at some point in your life heard someone say “mindset is everything” in one way or another. Jiu Jitsu is no exception. Your mindset in Jiu Jitsu is what will determine how people see you as a grappler, a teammate a student and a leader. Having the right mindset in Jiu Jitsu will carry over into your day to day life as well. It will be the difference in determining if you reach your goals or not.
It’s easy to say that you have to have the right mindset to achieve your goals, but what does that really mean? What is the “right” mindset? How do you ensure you have the right mindset? How do you even know if it is right or not?
All great questions, right? There are several theories on how to make sure you have the right mindset. Some say you should spend one third of your time with people that are above you, where you want to be, while spending another third of your time with people on your level and the final third of your time trying to help others that need guidance to get where you are. Other’s simplify this thought process and simply say you are the sum of the 5 people closest to you. Regardless of which belief system you subscribe to, the fact remains in order to achieve your goals you need to study those who have done what you want to do, whether you do that by studying instructionals, reading books, hiring mentors and or coaches or building relationships that put you in the room with and on the mats with the people that you want and need to spend time with.
Tom DeBlass talks in his video “Black Belt Mindset” about goal setting, adjusting goals and hitting your goals. He uses becoming a black belt in Jiu Jitsu as an example and discusses what happens after becoming a black belt. You can replace blackbelt with any goal in life and the principles remain the same. Tom says that we “lose” just as many Jiu Jitsu practitioners at black belt as we do at blue belt. He clarifies saying that while the black belts don’t typically stop actually training, they stop showing up as often, stop trying to help as much, and stop sharing the sport with the same passion they once did, almost as if to say, I have arrived at the peak.

In order to continue to grow we must set new goals when we achieve our original goal. The goals we set must push us outside of our comfort zone and align with not only who we are, but who we want to be. Tom talks in his video about how goals can change, and did change for him as he went from competition based goals as he was coming up through the ranks and making a name for himself, and even as a black belt for the first decade his primary goals were all based around winning competitions but then shifted to being more focused on helping as many people as possible. If you have been following Tom for any period of time you can see this shift in his social media presence and in his video instructionals. It’s important to plan where you want to be, who you want to be, and align your goals accordingly.
Once you are able to set the right goals the next step is to achieve them. Mindset starts with goals setting but certainly becomes more valuable as we require more focused effort on our goals. You have likely heard the saying “you can’t teach heart”;I must disagree with this to an extent. In my opinion “heart” in this case is essentially work ethic, which can most certainly be learned. As a child growing up you will learn to work based on what you see from your parents, and what they make you do as far as chores. As an adult, your work ethic will likely match that of those you spend your time with. Back to what we mentioned earlier, being around the right people that are making positive choices, working hard and achieving goals will pull you in that direction as well.
Having the “right” mindset is simply having the ability to continue to push forward no matter how hard it gets. It is having a growth mindset where you are obsessed with growing in one way or another. Having the right mindset is not refusing to fail, it’s simply always starting over again when you do fail. In Jiu Jitsu, as in life, there will be times when we fail to meet a goal, maybe it’s a competition we trained and obviously planned to win, or maybe it’s a weight loss goal or anything else in life for that matter. Sometimes we may fall short, it’s important to always recalibrate and go after those goals even harder.
