Single Leg X To Back Roll by Vlad Koulikov
The world of Sambo has a lot to add to your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu game. By exploring different worlds of grappling we can bring new techniques and concepts into our arsenal, giving us an advantage over an opponent who has focused solely on the principles of BJJ. Sambo could be considered a relatively newer martial art. It was developed in the Soviet Union era of Russia not long after World War I to improve solider hand to hand combat techniques. Sambo is actually an acronym when translated literally means “self defense without weapons.”
Single Leg X is all the rage right now in the BJJ world, especially for its ability to find leg locks and sweeps. But for Sambo Masters like Vlad, the Single Leg X is a basic concept. Vlad shares many of his conceptual based grappling with his DVD series combining Sambo and BJJ.
Today Vlad Koulikov shows us some Sambo for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with the single leg X to back roll. Vlad is a world champion competitor;placing three times in the USA Open and represented team USA in combat SAMBO in the World Championship in 2008. Nowadays Vlad spends his times on the mats training jiu jitsu. He has placed and won multiple NAGA and Grapplers Quest tournaments and was awarded the most technical fighter in the very first Grapplers Quest competition winning all my matches by submissions. Vlad uses his SAMBO background to enhance his jiu jitsu.
Let’s take a look at Vlad’s single leg X to back roll in the video below. Check it out now!
This is quite an impressive technique. The backwards roll and leg entrapment make this a very cool move. Notice how Vlad ends in what I can only describe as an “upside down” north south position with his opponent’s leg and foot basically gifted to him, a set up for an easy submission.
Integrating Sambo with Jiu Jitsu is one of the best tips Vlad can offer you. Sambo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are a perfect compliment for each other. BJJ is known for it's guard, chokes and body positions, while Sambo is known for it's takedowns and foot locks. Vlad should put out a DVD on how to integrate both.... oh wait.
