BJJ Elite Battle It Out In Brazil!

This weekend was the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu Jitsu World Tour- Rio de Janeiro stop.  The Rio stop is the largest event of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam, and was attended by over 11,000 spectators and over 2000 participants in 2017.

H.E. Abdulmunam Al Hashemi, the Chairman of the UAE Jiu Jitsu Federation, stated, “Due the the very high demand from players and fans, we decided to execute the event in 3 days, as we are expecting about 2500 players in Rio, which will make it the highest number of players participating during a single event at the Grand Abu Dhabi Slam World Tour.”

The first place winners in each weight class will receive 200 points, with second place receiving 160 points and third place receiving 120 points.  These points are accumulated and at the end of the year, the male and female competitors with the most points will earn additional cash prizes. In addition to the year end prizes, each tour stop awards cash prizes of more than $125,000, with prize money of $2500 to each black belt winner, and $3000 to the academy with the most points.

Exciting matches and a Surprise Guest

This exciting event was capped off by 7 of the 12 black belt finals decided by a submission.   Additionally, new president elect of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, made a surprise visit, dropping in on Sunday.  Bolsonaro is a controversial figure, as he draws comparisons to USA president Donald Trump with his far-right beliefs- criticized for his at-times misogynistic, homophobic, and militaristic views.
