Setting Goals in BJJ

,

You can’t argue with success, and, right now, success in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is synonymous with the name Gordon Ryan.

So, in addition to studying Ryan’s techniques, we would do well to spend a bit of time paying attention to Ryan’s overall philosophy.

Ryan explains that, in Jiu Jitsu, he has both short-term and long-term goals.  For Ryan, short-term goals are his goals for the next 12 months, while long-term goals comprise his plans for the upcoming 5 years.

Ryan believes that you should have three short-term goals and three long-term goals at the forefront of your mind at all times.

In his case, he is always able to answer questions about his goals.  At the time of this video, Ryan’s short-term goals included refining his wrestling so that he could beat Olympic wrestlers under an ADCC rule set.  Second, Ryan wants to increase his use of and success with kimuras. And, third, he wants to increase the number of triangles that he hits from various positions.

In the long-term, Ryan wants to complete his leg-pommelling system for guard passing, develop a system for using berimbolos and inversions to get into his partner’s legs, and refine his submission finishes so that he can submit an opponent with his first choice of attack every time.

If you can’t answer that question, your training is probably lacking focus.  In fact, you might be drifting. And, just as when you’re driving a car, you’ll never get to your destination if you haven’t figured out where you want to go.

While Ryan’s goals are most likely far more ambitious than our goals, we should definitely follow his example and structure our training by setting goals of our own.
