High Level Guys Such As ADCC Vet Lachlan Giles Know That If You Want To Play Half Guard, You Need Some Effective Sweeps!

Half guard sweeps are some of the most commonly talked about moves in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. A great half guard game employs a variety of sweeps, counters, and submissions. But when it comes to sweeps, what is the best sweep for half guard? It could be argued that this depends entirely on a player’s size and level of experience. But jiu jitsu is made to be efficient, and work for the smaller guy, equalizing and size differences. And when it comes to level of experience, if it is not simple enough for a white belt to work then how effective really is it?

When playing half guard, you always want to remember to get one leg trapping and one leg controlling your opponent. Lachlan demonstrates how to do this by getting up on your hip, keeping a distance from your opponent using framing. You open up the ability for your opponent to pass your guard if your bottom knee gets trapped. You will need to protect your far side from cross faces and pummeling. So there is a lot going on here that can be difficult to deal with when playing half guard. But to deal with all this, Lachlan emphasizes the importance of securing an under hook when playing half guard bottom. This is the first thing you should be focused on. Once you get the under hook you are setting yourself up for effective attacks.
