The Fundamentals of Grappling Will Make You The Best Grappler You Can Be
The foundation of a great grappler comes from his knowledge of fundamentals. In your early years of jiu jitsu this is where most of your time will be spent. New grapploing students are often eager to move onto more advanced jiu jitsutechniques. But students who have mastered the art of grappling will spend their entire careers training the fundamental techniques because they are simply what work.
Any competent jiu jitsu instructor will be teaching these fundamental concepts and movements with a high level of detail. Many bjj class hours will be spent drilling these techniques. For example, the closed guard is one of the most fundamental guard positions any grappling based scenario, whether gi, no gi, or Mixed Martial Arts. Yet you will spend years developing closed guard techniques, as you will find yourself in closed guard often when rolling in jiu jitsu or MMA.

Other fundamentals concepts such as sweeps, chokes, guard passing, turtle, side control, mount, hip escapes, half guard, open guard, under and over hooks, and even something as basic as getting good grips are easy to learn and can be very hard to master. Having mastery of simple jiu jitsu principles like how to grip a collar can be the minute details that determine whether a grappling match is won or lost. There are many fundamentals and concepts that will change your game, and lead developing more advanced jiu jitsu techniques.
Remember, a BJJ black belt is just a white belt who never quit. Black belt level martial artists and competitors will devote a large percentage training, focusing, and teaching very basic concepts, such as creating angles, escaping hips, tucking elbows, and the importance of maintaining contact. When listening to an experienced grappler explaining more advanced techniques, they will often use these concepts to break down the fundamental movement patterns. Even concepts like how to relax, how to control your breathing and when to use explosive movement will be used.
This may seem like an overwhelming amount of fundamentals and concepts for a beginner, but that is okay, because grappling is a very dynamic sport, with a lot of fascinating realms of technique to explore. You would be surprised to know how much your own game will be improved by mastering the very minute details of grappling.
