2 Moves For BJJ From Brazilian Top Team Coach Diego Gamonal

Brazilian Top Team Coach Diego Gamonal Is A Master Of The Invisible Arm Bar And Much More!

Diego Gamonal is the head coach of Brazilian Top Team Texas in San Antonio. Deigo began training jiu jitsu in his hometown with Julio Porto in 1998, but soon he moved to the Roberto Atalla academy, where his current Master Ricardo Marques was an instructor as well. Diego Gamonal is still an active competitor too. In 2017, he reached the final of all IBJJF Open competitions (Dallas, Miami, Long Beach, Boston), as well as winning the Open at the Charlotte Open and closing the year with the consecutive two time World No Gi, in California. Diego has a ton of insight and knowledge when it comes to high level grappling, and what works in competition. Today we are going to explore two of his favorite techniques. Are you ready? Then let’s get started!

#1: Counter The Over Under Pass

To counter the over under pass while playing guard, Diego first likes to establish his grips. He connects to his partner with a gi sleeve grip and a belt grip. This allows him to get his hips in the correct position to sweep his opponent. He weakens his opponent base by trapping the arm and feeding it underneath and inside of his opponent’s body. Notice that this exposes his training partner’s shoulder, which is the perfect direction to roll him in. It is very important to remember that before you hit the sweep you post with your foot on the mat. This is what helps you to generate enough power to flip your opponent over. It is also very important to make sure that when trapping the arm you place it underneath your leg. In the event that your opponent is able to pass your legs before you hit the sweep you can still pull it off by using your other leg to kick your opponent’s body forward, causing him to roll. This will again, put you in a north south position with control over your opponent’s upper body.

#2: Invisible Arm Bar From Over Under Defense

The invisible arm bar from over under defense is Diego Gamonal’s signature technique. It can even be set up using the over under pass counter we just learned. Diego is so notorious for his arm bar that he even released an instructional series dedicated entirely to it called “The Invisible Arm Bar” available exclusively on BJJFanatics.com! So what makes this technique so good? Well, it’s called invisible for a good reason, your opponent will not see this one coming! The first thing that Diego looks to do is prevent his opponent from pressure passing his guard. He frames on his training partner’s shoulder an bicep with both of his arms, giving him the ability to shrimp out, effectively escaping his hips and creating some space. The goal for Diego is to not let his foot get stuck underneath his training partner’s leg. From here Diego posts with his foot on the mat, and shrimps again to get his hips further away from his opponent while pushing down on his head. Now Diego can come up to his knees, with his training partner’s arm trapped between his legs. Diego extends his leg backwards, and pressures down to secure the arm, which causes his opponent to tap.

Diego Gamonal is a wealth of knowledge. If you have never seen him hit the invisible arm bar in competition you really need to. Check out the video below to witness it. And if you liked these techniques then be sure to give them a try the next time you are on the mats.
