Brandon is one of the most highly respected instructors in the global 10th Planet organization. He teaches seminars all over the United States on a regular basis. His academy, 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Decatur was recognized as the top ranked academy in the 10th Planet system in 2014, largely in part to the team's competitive successes and Brandon's reputation as a world class instructor.

In Brandon McCaghren’s instruction series, “Rubber Guard: The Meathook,” available exclusively from BJJ Fanatics, there is a dictionary of amazing techniques for anyone who loves to play the rubber guard. What is great about these 10th Planet techniques is that not many people out there know how to defend against them, giving you a huge advantage over your opponents!

The rubber guard is a 10th planet technique that involves the player ‘breaking down’ their opponent into the rubber guard, while maintaining a high level of control. It also utilizes extensive flexibility to control the opponent with one arm and one leg. The opposite arm in turn is free to attempt submissions, sweeps or to strike the trapped head of the opponent. Let’s check out 2 rubber guard techniques for BJJ from the 10th planet black belt Brandon McCaghren!

#1: Carni Sweep by Brandon McCaghren

Start this one with your bottom side leg straight out. You want to trap your opponent’s near side arm with your top leg while occupying the space next to your opponent’s hip. Brandon uses his shin to drive into his opponent’s neck, which can be very painful and even sometimes cause a tap. You can hit the sweep when your training partner tries to posture back into you. To complete the sweep, post your foot on the mat and lift your training partner using a butterfly hook. This sweep puts a ton of stress on your training partner’s shoulder, so go slow when first learning this one!

#2: Gogo Clinch Submission by Brandon McCaghren

In this position Brandon is showing how to use the gogo clinch to effectively keep your opponent’s posture broken down. The gogo clinch submission is a new submission straight out of the 10th Planet jiu jitsu system. This technique is a bit more advanced in that it requires a certain amount of flexibility in order to work. The clinch starts from an omoplata or gogoplata set up or from closed guard. First get your leg over your training partner’s shoulder like you were setting up the omoplata submission. The same side arm goes up over your leg and your opponent’s head is trapped between the back of your leg and your knee. Now with your other arm grab under your training partner’s knee. You can think of this one like clinching your training partner using your entire body. To finish this one, you pass the leg over and land so the Achilles is crossing the arm. You want to establish your grips at the neck and the knee of your opponent. Notice that McCaghren is completely on his side as this will not work if you are on your back. From here connect your hands with a gable grip and secure the choke.

The rubber is so effective because it is incredibly dynamic. With techniques like these, you are sure to rapidly improve your guard play. The 10th planet system is truly revolutionary. Guys like Eddie Bravo and Brandon McCaghren have completely revolutionized the sport by countering all of the most common BJJ guards and submissions. If you liked these techniques then be sure to check out Brandon’s instruction series, “Rubber Guard: The Meathook,” available exclusively on BJJFanatics.com!
