3 High Level Techniques From Chael Sonnen
Any seasoned grappler will tell you that no technique works 100 percent of the time. If you hesitate, even for a second or your position is not secure, it often ends in a failed technique. A common thread among all of Chael Sonnen’s methodology is to always be moving, and to be greedy and get as many moves in a series as you can, before your opponent lands any.
Chael's approach to grappling comes from years of competing at the highest levels of wrestling, submission grappling and MMA. His common sense approach to jiu-jitsu / grappling is a refreshing approach to new and experienced grapplers to refine their game in a way that "makes sense".
If you did not already know, Chael Sonnen has just recently released an instructional series called “Gangster Grappling By Chael Sonnen,” available exclusively on BJJFanatics.com. Chael Sonnen is an American mixed martial artist currently competing in the heavy weight division of Bellator MMA. Chael has been a professional MMA competitor since 1997 having fought in the UFC, WEC and Pancrase.
Let’s explore 3 high level techniques from Chael Sonnen that you can add into your BJJ arsenal today, no matter your level of experience!
#1: Surprise Grappling Attack
Chael Sonnen has gotten very good at jiu jitsu over the years by effectively learning how to shut it down. Sonnen starts this technique standing and controlling his opponent’s back. He is gripping his opponent with an S grip around the waist. Sonnen steps his leg to the inside of his training partner. He releases his grips, sits and spins, locking his opponent’s leg and taking him down to the mat. The key detail of this technique is to control your opponent’s hips. When you start standing you do not want there to be any space in between yourself and your training partner’s back.
#2: Taking The Mount / Countering The Bridge
If you have done Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for any length of time you will know that the mount can be a very powerful position to dominate, control and submit your opponent. However, it requires good technique to be able to defend against your training partner’s counter. It is very common for the guy on bottom to try and bridge to bump you.
Chael shares with us a very important detail about the mount position. In any form of combat, when you end up in the mount you want to touch your heels together and arch your back to push your hips in. You do not want to be lazy and just lay on top of your opponent because that is how you get swept easily.
#3: Head and Arm Choke
This is an awesome head and arm choke from Chael Sonnen, Bernardo Faria, and Fabiano Scherner! If you are in a UFC or real life street fight scenario where you need to control your attack on the ground, this is a great way to avoid being punched or getting elbowed. You can even use this one for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu where you do not have to worry about punches. It is still a great way to control your opponent’s arms and render their defense ineffective.
Chael Sonnen is a household name in the MMA community, and it is for a very simple reason - he talks a big game, and then he backs it up.
The Chael Sonnen blueprint is really pretty simple at its base: take the person down, smash through the guard, and start hunting for chokes and joint locks. This is the formula that he has used to fight more world champions than anyone else, with incredible and consistent success. See the techniques that brought us epic main events like the vice-like Guillotine that he used to choke Shogun Rua unconscious, or the throws and passes he used to edge out greats like Michael Bisping and Wanderlei Silva. In fact, Chael is so confident in these BJJ hacks that he has competed at the highest levels of submission grappling, including 3 trips to ADCC, where he has always won in the early rounds and a huge win in a Superfight where he defeated the legend Leo Viera in 2017.
