ADCC Spotlight: Craig Jones

,

The ADCC World Championships are coming up and a number of our BJJ Fanatics family members are competing.  Let’s profile another one now.

Next up is Craig Jones.

Like his coach Lachlan Giles, Jones has made a name for himself as one of the preeminent Australian grapplers competing today.

Even before he found BJJ, Jones was notorious for his rough and tumble lifestyle.  He played Australian rules football and basketball, and he began training in taekwando and Judo.  However, by 15-years-old, Jones had discovered Mixed Martial Arts thanks to the UFC. From then on, his goals centered on grappling.

He began his training under his cousin Matt Jones’s BJJ Academy in 2006.  From this beginning, Jones moved on to Absolute MMA as a purple belt, which is where his relationship with Lachlan Giles began.

Jones’s skills began to reveal themselves around this time in his Jiu Jitsu career.  As a purple belt, Jones earned first place at the NAGA World Championship in 2014. That same year, he also earned first place in the AFBJJ Pan Pacific Championship.  Then, in 2015, he won first place in the IBJJF World No-Gi Championships.

During his brief stint as a brown belt, Jones placed third in the 2016 UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro Championship.  Then, after earning his black belt under Lachlan Giles only one year later, He won first place in the ADCC Asian & Oceania Trials in 2014 and 2016.  Then, in 2017, Jones earned third place in the EBI 11 Invitational.

2018 saw Jones win third place in the Kasai 2 185 lbs Grand Prix and win the Polaris 185 lbs Champion and the Polaris 205 lbs Champion.

Jones again won the Polaris 185 lbs Championship in 2019.

As if Jones wasn’t busy enough with all of these competitions, he also found time to begin his career as an instructor and to earn a degree in Psychology.

At the ADCC World Championships, Jones will be competing in the -88 kg division.
