ADCC Spotlight: Lachlan Giles
The ADCC World Championships are coming up this weekend, so let’s take a look at some of our BJJ Fanatics family members who are competing.
One grappler who always shines during competition is Lachlan Giles.
Giles is one of the preeminent Australian grapplers in BJJ history. He began his martial arts career with a brief foray into Kung Fu before discovering Brazilian Jiu Jitsu by way of Royce Gracie’s legendary performance in the UFC.
Finding a local BJJ Academy, Giles slowly moved away from Kung Fu and toward Jiu Jitsu. His first instructor was Tyrone Crosse and he was awarded his blue and purple belts by Crosse. However, upon Giles’s return from a knee injury, John Simon had assumed teaching responsibilities at Giles’s academy and he was the coach who awarded Giles his brown and black belts.
Giles has excelled in every aspect of BJJ. As a competitor, he has earned first place in the 2016 and 2017 IBJJF Pan-Pacific Championship in both Gi and No-Gi. He also placed first in the ADCC Asia & Oceania Trials in 2015, 2017, and 2019. Plus, in 2018, Giles won first place in the UAEJJF Continental Pro Championship.
Most recently, as part of the BJJ Fanatics team at the inaugural Kinektic team tournament, Lachlan Giles singlehandedly defeated all five members of Team Lights Out Urban Achievers, all with wins by submission.
Not only is Giles still a formidable competitor, he has already gained praise as a coach. He began coaching at Renegade MMA in 2013, but quickly moved on to teaching at Absolute MMA in Melbourne City.
At Absolute MMA, Giles began working with Thiago Stefanutti, the head coach there. Stefanutti had a significant impact on the evolution of Giles’s Jiu Jitsu style. Plus, when Absolute MMA opened a new branch in St. Kilda, Giles was tabbed for the position.
Working out of St. Kilda, Giles had the opportunity to teach several successful Jiu Jiteros. Included among his most well-known students are Livia Gluchowska and Craig Jones.
Finally, as if fame as a competitor and coach wasn’t impressive enough on his resume, Giles also pursued and attained a PhD in Physiotherapy in 2016.
At the ADCC World Championships, Giles will be competing in the -77 kg division.
