Rodrigo Artilheiro starts this demonstration in bottom half guard. Typically the way he sets this up is with a high knee shield and a cross collar grip on his training partner’s gi lapel. He emphasizes the placement of his arm;notice that it is tucked inside the leg that he is using for the knee shield. By bracing his elbow he is further able to support his hand that has the cross collar grip. If Bernardo starts moving back, Rodrigo simply pulls him forward. If Bernardo starts pushing in Rodrigo pushes him away, keeping his distance. From here Rodrigo goes for the under hook. He punches through with his arm and kicks his leg as if he is going for the scissor sweep. From here he kicks is leg and shoots in for the under hook. Now Rodrigo tries to bring his out side leg forward by bumping Bernardo forwarding and switching position. His left ankle goes cross over and now he has captured his training partner’s leg.  Notice there this is a position where Bernardo can really put a lot of pressure on Rodrigo with the whizzer. To clear this, you want to drive forward with your knees and create momentum as you fake the sweep and snap your training partner down. From here you have beat the whizzer and have control of your training partner’s back.

As you can tell, this is a very cool technique. Even just the way Rodrigo plays half guard is really unique. He uses his knee to control the distance by either pushing or pull his opponent. Then when he gets up to the dog fight position Rodrigo pretends to go for a sweep and then instead pull his hand out and clears the whizzer. This is the most important detail of the entire technique, as it is what creates a distraction and causes your opponent to get tricked. So if you are having any problems with the whizzer this might be a good one for you to try the next time you are in a live roll or in competition. It could be the difference between clearing the whizzer and getting smashed. I hope you found this video useful. Thank you Rodrigo Artilheiro for sharing this amazing technique with us today!
