Fundamentals of a Jiu-Jitsu Renegade is packed to the gills with Osiander gems of knowledge. On top of razor sharp technique you will get the a grounded approach to Jiu-Jitsu. As we said before Kurt is very much a no nonsense type of guy. He keeps his teaching simple and brutal. A great example of Kurt’s brutal game is this devastating choke from side control!
In the video Kurt demonstrates to Loop Chokes that are sure to catch your opponent slipping. A common reaction when someone is stuck in side control is to bridge their hips away in an attempt to reestablish their guard. During this time is when Kurt elects to enter into his Loop Choke.

Let’s look at how the magic happens for the first variation of the Loop Choke. Kurt is utilizing heavy pressure from side control with left arm over his partner’s head. As the partner begins the escape Kurt starts to slide his hand under his partner’s head into the collar. If the partner is flat this will be much more difficult to do.
This will be a good indicator for self analysis because if you cannot establish a strong grip there is a good chance that your partner isn’t on their side enough. Once the grip is set Kurt positions his legs over his partners head. From here Kurt starts to flatten his partner and applies the finish. He uses the term start the lawnmower for how his hand finishes the choke. This is a perfect example of Kurt’s ultra effective, grounded teaching style.
The second version of this choke involves changing the grip that we use on the partner's arm. Maintaining the choking grip is essential through this process otherwise the submission will be lost. If the opponent feels like they will be able to turn to their turtle to defend this is a great opportunity to go around the back of their arm to further set the Pin/Choke as seen at the 3:24 mark.
One great detail to surely take away from this technique demo is how Kurt utilizes the Pin. By Pinning his partner he forces them to choose which way to attempt an escape. One will only choke them further while stuck in the Loop Choke, while the other is made impossible by controlling the opponent’s arm/upper body. As you settle into the position you will feel the choke start to engage. What’s great about this submission attempt is that if it fails you won’t be too out of position. By maintaining a heavy base it will make it difficult to defeat the entire position.
