It is a conscious effort that I must put in, but I feel myself becoming a better person.”
In this video Tom uses the scissors sweep as a staging position for either a triangle or single leg. Tom starts the video by explaining the higher you go in Jiu Jitsu, it is unrealistic to expect the first or second technique to work. Tom continues that often at the higher levels it is the 3rd or 4th technique that works. Tom starts in the traditional scissors sweep position from closed guard. He has one knee pushing against his opponent’s belly and one leg pulling with his hips brought out. Tom explains that the goal is to secure wrist control of the arm on the inside and elbow control of the arm on the outside. He often starts with a two on one grip as a precursor to the next grip. Once he has the grips secured it is a simple matter to bring your knee up and secure a triangle. If your opponent fights the submission then DeBlass advocates finishing the scissors sweep. Last, Tom suggest that if your opponent counters by bringing one leg out then simply take a single leg. Tom uses the danger of a sweep to set up a submission. It is a common theme of DeBlass, always having your opponent reacting to you and never letting your opponent is comfortable. Well done Mr. DeBlass!
