Neil Melanson has more than a few amazing instructional series on BJJ Fanatics, but today we are going to look at a technique off of his “Ground Marshal Half Guard” instructional series. When it comes to the half guard, Neil Melanson has a very efficient and advanced approach to how he teaches it. He uses tons of savage pressure and unorthodox techniques to completely dominate his opponent and control where the fight goes. Let’s check out this really unique technique, a hip bump from the octopus guard.
The octopus guard comes straight from the mind of Eduardo Telles. At first glance this seems like the type of guard that makes no sense, especially if you are a beginner. But Neil Melanson knows all about this guard, so let’s take a look. Watch the video below and then we will break down Neil’s technique. Check it out now!
You might be wondering why the octopus guard makes an appearance on an instructional series based on the half guard. If you are not familiar with Eduardo Telles’ clever guard play, he plays the octopus guard from half guard when his opponent turns their back to him in an attempt to pass. Neil has the perfect guard pass to deal with the octopus and it even sets you up for a beautiful head and arm choke.
Melanson starts off this technique from bottom half guard, in this case his opponent has already moved into the octopus guard. Neil comes up and gets his arm around his opponent’s back. He posts on his other arm in order to get his head up above his opponent’s back. He stays tight to his training partner and pulls him in. Now his training partner shifts his weight and sits up. Melanson is looking to sweep his opponent from here. To do this he pulls while turning his head the opposite direction and driving with his left leg to bump his opponent over.
There are a couple options from this position, such as leg locks. What Melanson likes to do is quickly recover his base and pin his opponent. Once he has his lock around his opponents back he can roll he can pass to his back side and finish with arm and head choke.
As you can probably tell, this is a really amazing technique for dealing with the octopus guard! The octopus guard is one of those positions that only some specialists will play. Because of that, the player will think they have an easy advantage over you. But little do they know, you have learned an amazing counter from Neil Melanson! So be sure to have this one in your arsenal to pull out in that rare moment you find yourself in octopus guard.
