KISS Me, You Fool!

Don’t worry, this is not about romance. And it’s not about aging rock stars in grease paint makeup.
It’s about the hardest piece of advice for BJJ students—and especially newer BJJ students: Keep It Simple, Stupid.
Jiu Jitsu is a complex world of mixed signals, especially for beginners. Often, we’re told to focus on the basics. But it’s sometimes hard to believe that shrimping across the mats will get us to that next stripe or that higher belt. And when we start scrolling through YouTube videos after class, we can be tempted to believe that some exotic new trick will make up for our lack of technique and help us start racking up submissions against our buddies.
Bernardo Faria has some sick omoplatas too. His tips unlock the secrets of not only securing the omoplata position, but finishing the submission too - which can is the REAL challenge.
It’s easy to be charmed by those videos and to start collecting tricks. But let’s be honest, we don’t practice those tricks very much, so we don’t do them very well. And since we’ve been ignoring our basic drills, we don’t do the basics very well, either.
Even in our academies, there are temptations to ditch the basics for fancier moves. Each time our academy welcomes in a visiting master for a seminar, we’re tantalized by all kinds of new moves that we hope will make us invincible on the mats.
Except it never quite works out that way, does it?
This is why it’s important to Keep It Simple, Stupid. Now, does this mean you can only focus upon shrimping? Does it mean you should delete the YouTube app from your phone? Of course not!
What it means is that we should be selective about what we add to our Jiu Jitsu repertoire. It may look cool when a lanky 25 year-old executes that technique, but will it work for someone with a shorter, stockier build? In all honesty, there are just some things my 40+ year-old body can’t do anymore. Asking these questions can save me lots of time and frustration.
But—most importantly—I need to take the time to integrate a new technique into my game.

For instance, my current fascination is omoplata. But for me to integrate omoplata into my game, I need to understand it—not just as an isolated technique but as an option I can fluidly move into and out of during a roll.
If it sounds like it’ll take a while, you’re right. When I commit to working the omoplata into my game, it means I have to spend a lot of time on it. And it means I have to put some of those other tempting new tricks on the back burner.
Bernardo Faria’s Omoplata Everyone is a great example of how to incorporate a new technique into your game. He covers a few basic versions of the omoplata and then spends the rest of those 4 DVDs showing different ways to enter into those basic versions of the omoplata.
It’s thorough. It’s methodical. It takes time. But those are the reasons it’ll work. It’s NOT just two minutes of rushed explanations of an isolated move.
The end result? Your game may not have all the variety you dream of. But, if you can actually use those techniques successfully, who wouldn’t be satisfied keeping things simple?
