I used to think that a day off meant doing absolutely nothing physical, so that the body could “recover”. I treated my days off like this for a long time. Probably longer than I’d like to admit. But it makes sense, right? I had been working really hard, beating up my body, fighting, strength training, pushing myself to the limits. It only made sense that on a rest day, I would just, you know, rest.

For some reason my rest day wasn’t having the effect I’d hoped for. I’d often times feel worse the next day. I would stiffen up, and feel low on energy. It was as if doing nothing was much worse for me. Id heard the term “active recovery” before, but for whatever reason I hadn’t given it much consideration. Until I did.
On a day off, if you hope to recover you need to pump some healing blood. “But its my day off”, you say. Sorry, in order to get the most out of a day off you’ll still have to move. Watching 7 movies and eating ice cream isn’t going to get the job done.
You don’t have to push your body into overdrive, you just have to move. Consider doing something light that gets the blood flowing and heats the body to turn on its healing power. Try a yoga class, go for a long walk, or even just get on the floor and perform some stretches while you’re watching TV.

Figure out something active that you enjoy doing, and make it a part of your rest day regimen. You’ll feel better faster by staying active on your day off, and you’ll find yourself energized and ready for your return to the training room.
