Today we are going to check out one of Romulo Barral’s techniques from a segment off of his new instructional series “The Everyday Porrada Spider Guard.” Barral is notorious for his spider guard. Here you will see Romulo show a basic way to retain the guard when playing spider. Watch the video below and then we will break down Romulo Barral’s double under guard recovery. Check it out now!
One of the most common issues when using the spider guard is being stacked, especially when competing with a tall opponent or someone with long arms. By posturing up, a taller person can start to break down your guard and your grips. One thing you do not want to happen is to get stacked, as this is a very difficult position to end up in. If you end up here you lost the battle a long time ago. Barral counters this by quickly shooting his legs up. This helps prevent his opponent from posturing up. Barral can’t hang out here for too long though, his hips are too light. But the momentum he uses to get into this position allows him to temporarily off balance his opponent while recovering his guard. This is a very simply recovery to get back into spider guard.
Most of the time is it not that simple though. Usually your opponent will be able to control your legs. When you drop to recover your guard your opponent will typically already have control of your thighs with double under hooks. It is very important to maintain your grips in this scenario. Remember your legs are always stronger than a person’s arms. Your legs should be heavy on top of your opponent’s arms which will allow you to move backwards with your shoulders. It is likely your opponent will try to regain his double under hooks, connecting his hands in an attempt to smash pass your guard. When your opponent’s hands are connected he has a much stronger grip around your legs. By keeping your legs heavy and moving your shoulders back you can prevent this while giving yourself enough space to recover your guard.
This is impressive stuff from Romulo Barral. What I like the most about it is just how dead simple it can be to recover your spider guard. If you love playing spider guard, or any other type of open guard, you will likely have been stacked. It is not a fun position to end up in, and can get very frustrating really quick. But with simple techniques like the one Romulo has shared with us today can be incredibly beneficial when it comes to recovering your guard. So give this one a try the next time you are in a live roll and playing spider guard against someone who is tall. It will definitely help bring your game to the next level!
