The Big Guys Guide to Beginning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Advice for Big Boned BJJ

Just starting out in Brazilian jiu jitsu can be hard for anyone. Putting your body under a new form of stress, getting to know new people, remembering techniques, and maybe even just walking through the door!  It can all be a very scary, and unsettling, and maybe even more so for our larger, beginner jiu-jitsu family.

If you are a bigger guy that is maybe struggling right now to get settled in while training, or maybe on the fence about heading out to that first class. You have come to the right place! We are here to offer a couple of tips to make this new, scary but exciting experience a little easier!

No One Is Judging You, So Don't Be So Hard On Yourself!

Every single person that walks in a jiu jitsu gym has some form of fundamental jiu jitsu deficiency. From weight, to coordination, to flexibility.  These are different with everyone, and we could list hundreds here. You are no different than anyone. You deserve to learn, grow, and get better. Everyone is there to help, and we all work on bettering our deficiencies together.

Do What You Can, And Always Give It Your Best

Being a bit bigger, and seeing the young, in-shape guys in the crowd can be a little intimidating. But so what? You do not have to be able to invert during your second class. You do not need to be able to do all the squats during the warm up. If you need to take a break during the jog at the beginning of class, then do so! Your peers in the gym are just looking for you to do your best. BUT do not settle yourself short! Do what you can. Push yourself for one more pushup. Run one more lap around the mat. Those little extra pushes add up, and you will get better if you push just a bit harder when you can.

Even Though You Are Bigger, The Sky Is Still The Limit

If you want to compete; if you want to lose some weight; if you want to just be able to berimbolo one day. These are all attainable! You just have to put in the time, and do the work. Do not think because you are bigger that you have a deficiency, or that you are can not accomplish whatever goal you have set in your mind. Anything is achievable, as long as you have a clear vision, you keep your eyes on the prize and have a good work ethic. Even smaller guys will achieve nothing if they do not work hard. So stay hungry, and stay focused!

The point of all this is to do what you can, where you are, with what you have. This isn't a race. Any experienced jiu jitsu practitioner knows that everything does not come overnight. Show up. Give everything you have, and you can GUARANTEE that everything will get easier!

BJJ Black Belt and Self Defense Expert Rodrigo Artilheiro is a bigger, older guy who still crushes the young bucks on the mats!  Check out his Lazy Closed Guard instructional and develop a guard that is maximally aggressive with minimum effort!  You can get it here!
